It can be exhausting on the hunt. Here’s how I have approached it to avoid pouring my time into every application. I tier my applications into three categories.
Low interest; low effort - jobs on LinkedIn with easy apply that you’re not really into but could do without hating life. Apply and move on. Quick and easy with low probability of response.
Moderate interest; moderate effort - jobs that sound interesting and require an application in their own web system. I do a quick scan of their job description, swap out a few words in my resume to match what they say, and apply. It takes maybe 15 minutes tops. Chances of hearing back are low but you haven’t killed yourself to make a perfect application.
High interest; high effort - are you seeing my theme? 😊 These are like…maybe 20% of applications. I do more word and phrase matching with the job post, and I write a cover letter that makes the connection between my experience and their job. It’s a totally pain in the butt, and it can take me 60-90 minutes (I really struggle with cover letters).
In addition to the above, doing the awkward ask for informational interviews throughout your network will be key. If there is any sort of certification that would help with in-demand skills, look into things like Coursera and schools that offer professional certificates (some can be super pricey).
By the way, you have to get used to the rejections. It’s harsh but you need to let them roll off your back as best you can. My system has helped me for some reason. Only the high interest ones are depressing. Then I tell myself it’s not personal…even tho it sure feels like it. 😕 I wish you all the best.
I really feel for you. I read this and felt overwhelmed by the strategic thinking that has to go in to a job search.
The workplace has certainly passed me by. I’m in my mid 60s and can’t imagine what this might feel like.
I wish you the very best in your search.
