I’m retired now, but peopled who know me aren’t surprised. if I tell people I don’t know that I used to work for NASA they are usually surprised. The questions I get most are “Did we really put men on the moon,” and “Are there really aliens out ther?” I get tired of hearing those questions. Once when I was trying to explain how we really did go to the moon the woman replied, “Why should I believe you? You’re part of the conspiracy.”
This is really disturbing—how many people in North America are in distrust with the reality and blindly rely on the telltale stories and short videos from the media instead of finding the information from the credible sources.
I don’t think anyone’s really been surprised by what I do. They’re more so surprised by the job existing, not that I’m the one with the job

When I tell people I work for the EPA, they ask what is it? I am surprised people have never heard of the EPA.
If anyone has been surprised, they haven’t let on. I would guess it’s kind of hard for me, I’m quieter and more reserved. Could probably say anything and nobody would bat an eye.
Um for your job title you’re super smart so that is quiet adjacent lol
This is interesting because strangers have also guessed that I'm a nurse. I think this stems from inherent bias around women's place in the workforce. When they hear my actual job title they are usually shocked and say something about how hard chemistry was in high school.
Lol omg when I was in the lab I used to get that a lot too. People are funny
I'm curious what about your personality makes people think you're a nurse?
I am a nurse but I also work in regulatory so they wouldn't be wrong in my case :)
I don't think some people realize that nurses apply science and do a LOT of research...so it's not a stretch to have a similar personality to most in pharma.
Lilly actually employs over 5% nurses and not just in clin trials and we tend to rise to prominent positions due to our action-oriented personalities.
I don't really have the opportunity to surprise people with my profession. The people I talk about work with are either a) my coworkers, who obviously know where I work, or b) my friends, who already know. I don't meet many strangers these days.
Oh really? You don’t go to networking events?

People aren’t too surprised that I’m an engineer
I’m a technical person and always yap about related topics lol
Most of the people who know me are not surprised about me being an HCP and MD, due to my strong empathy and outspoken nature. And I agree with you: looks can be misleading.
This is funny because in all my personality tests I should be a creative. I have always been a bit outside of the box created for scientists. Diversity of personality is a good thing but, some might not realize it can be a gift.
