Be honest, at work, are you the “do what’s required” type or the “go above and beyond” type? I used to believe that going the extra mile always pays off. Staying late, taking on more, giving 110%. But I’ve also seen people do the bare minimum and still grow, get promoted, or simply protect their peace. So now I wonder… is going above and beyond always worth it?Or does it depend on the company, leadership and growth opportunities?

I've always been the above and beyond type. After this last layoff, I'm seriously questioning why I ever bothered. 4 consecutive years beating targets on shoestring budgets, then a new director was brought in who wanted to "shake things up" and me and the rest of my team were all let go within a month. I'm never going to fall into the loyalty trap again.

I am sorry you went through that although a struggling company with a bad economy and job market is never a good combination.
At my last FTE, it was a small family-owned business, that went through 3-4 layoffs / job eliminations with a little over a year of hiring / wage freezes and this was in the 23 months and 1 day that I was there. The company ended up closing, filing the bankruptcy, and the 44-year-old owner ended up committing suicide only two weeks later.

I always go above and beyond in everything I do. I think it's related to OCD. I have no off switch when it comes to many things. It's caused negative as well as positive outcomes. I think a lot of people have similar issues, from OCD to ADHD, to a certain extent.

Yes they do, you find yourself wanting to do things to perfection.

I “go above and beyond” BUT you have to be doing the RIGHT THINGS to get promoted. And the right things are those tasks that are the most valuable to the organization. You identify those things by being able to calculate opportunity costs (by leveraging other people’s time) and political visibility. You can also ask yourself “Am I being busy doing stuff? Or am I effective?”

Right but there’s also an old adage. If you do work and no one sees it then it doesn’t count.

Absolutely should and does depend on the company and bosses. I’ve seen so many people burn out because they went above and beyond constantly and never got anything for it. I enjoy being somewhere where I can do extra work, and it’s recognized. You just have to be mindful that it’s not a good choice everywhere.

Recognition is very important, sometimes you go above and beyond and it goes unnoticed or unappreciated.

I would like to think it depends on the company, leadership (many call themselves leaders although they might have the title of manager which does not actually mean they are leaders).
Over the years, I have seen all types getting promoted from those who work hard / smart to those who like to kiss up with management to those who lazy which management thinks they are just bored to those who should be fired although they are just moved to another manager to deal with them.
I think the real problem is that lately we have a bunch of youngins who have the degree(s) / education in managerial positions although they lack the real-world skills, "soft" skills, and work experience (basically having next to no work experience at all).
All we can do is worry about ourselves and do the best we can. Yes, there are some out there who think they need to do just enough to collect a paycheck and not get fired.

What are some things you guys wish you knew before you started your NetSuite implementation?

I’m at a small company that’s sort of becoming medium sized, and a new exec pushing to quickly implement NetSuite and I just want to make sure we’re not getting in over our heads, he’s trying to get this done within two months

We currently use Salesforce, quick books, and excel, we’ll be consolidating a lot of accounting and finance stuff into netsuite and integrating it with Salesforce
