Been unemployed for 5 months. Finally got an offer but it's a lowball because of the shitty market. How do I navigate?

Initial range was $90K to $110K

Offer is $98K

I really want $105K, would it be a bad idea to ask if the gap is so big? And the market is an employers market?

Context: it's a small start-up that is self funded for now. I was making $120K before so this would be a huge paycut but I don't have many options.

Would love some advice, thank you!

Go for it. That's what negotiation is for, right? They can always say no and stick with their original offer, but what if they say yes?

like

Just take it

like

Take it and keep looking

like

Yeahhh.... Honestly I think that might be the way to go but the issue is that the role is in person

The offer is in the middle of the range so there is room for negotiation. Be excited for the offer but ask if they can go to the top of the range. If not, I would not consider it a low ball and keep looking. They could have gone to the absolute bottom of the range or even lower. Making at the max of the range can have a disadvantage too. When a year has gone by and you are looking for a raise they will be at the max of their range and it will be difficult to go high enough in a raise to make it feel like anything. The other consideration is that if you don’t get the $7K more your lifestyle hasn’t really changed. If you go into the position making a positive impression the increases will come, and if there is a layoff, you won’t be at the top of the list because you’re indispensable and you are at a bargain cost for the position.

like

Ahhh that's fair. Thank you for the perspective. 🙏

It’s perfectly normal to negotiate. 7k extra isn’t that big of a deal and they shouldn’t have an issue with it.

Would 10K be pushing it?

I just received my first offer in 7 months -- for a 3-month contract at $48/hr. I'm taking it. Why? I'm at my finances end and I don't want the gap in my resume to get any longer. I want to try to parlay this into something longer -- or at least use it as a better position from which to search for a subsequent role. I presume that I'll look more attractive if I'm employed. Bottom Line: In this market, I don't feel like it's wise to hold out for perfect. Unless we demonstrate our continued relevance, we'll end up working retail while AI do our old jobs. (The worst part is the creeping sense that some employers may accept a job done badly by AI if it seems cheaper than hiring a real human being who needs to pay for housing, food and utilities.)

like

Yeah that's true, beggars like us can't be choosers lol. Thanks!

Would definitely try to ask for more but frame it in the way of how you're expertise and experience can drive results. Worse comes to worse, they aren't able to budge and you can still take the role with what they offered while continuing to look for a job within your desired range just so you have money coming in

like

Thank you, I'll email them tomorrow morning! 🙏

The gap is pretty minimal. I wouldn’t anticipate any issues with discussing this.

You could say you were anticipating $105 with goal setting/validation to reach the $110 within 6 months to a year. Can you elaborate on why the offer is at $98?

like

I think you have some wiggle room to ask. When they give you a range there’s actually a target area within that range they like to stick to. Which defeats the purpose of sharing the range if they never want to offer the highest. What I noticed talking to recruiters.

But ask !! To encourage you, you can continue looking as you take this job on and I’m sure you can find something that’s more on par with your salary expectations .

I have been interviewing for senior roles and based on the salary ranges provided. I can expect to make the same, slightly lower, but not that much higher :(

But the thing is I don't want to ask for too much and risk losing the offer entirely. I think that's the tricky bit here.

Lower for a senior role? What the heck??

This is for a mid level role

Take the offer and drive the salary up from working on the inside instead of from the outside.

How do people here think of compensation changes exiting consulting to an early stage startup? (I.e how much of a cut or bump would you expect, how much equity would you require to make up for lost guaranteed cash comp etc.). For all my fans of the “it depends”, let’s assume each job’s WLB are identical and both are equally interesting. This particular company is just around 40 employees, tech startup very broadly speaking. TIA.

Hello! Looking at an opportunity with established startup in UK that's just been acquired by a large co. I'm US based and my salary is around $250k (NYC) -I've been asked my expectation without the startup giving me a range to work from (though I've asked). I'm not sure how to reply to them because I have a feeling that my requirement may be out of their range and while I don't want to undercut my value, I also don't want to be cut out of the process because it's an interesting co. Any advice?
