Streeterville. Close RN & pretty easy to get to old town as well, but also kind of quiet & peaceful. Right by the river and the lakefront
I love living in River North
Pro
1: Lincoln Park - you objectively just can’t beat it on any front. 2: West Loop - super hip, lots of character in some buildings but there are a lot of buildings that got renovated too cheap and lost their character so be careful there. 3: Old Town - if you wanna live like you’re still in college (not in a bad way per se) this is the place for you, but the moment you turn 28 and hangovers can turn into all day affairs, you’re going to all of a sudden feel too old for that hood. 4: Lakeview - it’s a very worthy knock-off of Lincoln Park, but a tad cheaper, that sounded so much meaner than I intended. 5: Wicker - just don’t live on Milwaukee, you also won’t regret waiting a couple years to move out here, if you’re into the food/bev scene you’ll be visiting it quite often anyway on nights and weekends. Stay away from River North, Loop, South Loop, Streeterville.
Young crowd is old town, Lincoln park and Lakeview. You can also lump in Gold Coast with old town due to its close proximity. Wicker is a bit far from all the other neighborhoods mentioned but also a popular area for 20-somethings. There’s a bunch of responses saying this but it sounds like you’re more focused on living in a high rise than actually being where the action is in which case just take your pic from all the overpriced high rises in river north.
Southport Corridor
I lived there for 4 years during and post college - absolutely loved it
River north, old town, river west, south loop, west loop
Sorry I should’ve clarified I’ve basically narrowed it down to those neighborhoods - my ignorant self thought that’s basically Chicago (besides Streeterville and LP) lol oops
Lincoln Park/Lakeview/Roscoe Village - further south is not as nice of neighborhoods to walk around and more expensive. Lots of bars around the area too and a short walk to the lakefront depending on where you land!
I lived in Lakeview for 3 years as well but after the first year found myself spending most weekend nights in old town. The bar scene after 10pm gets old in Lakeview. I can only go to Kirkwood, the river and Trader Todd’s so many times. The day drinking scene in south Lakeview is pretty solid though. Ain’t nothing in Roscoe village though
Any of the neighborhoods listed could be fine, it honestly depends on what is important to you in a neighborhood.
For example - Are you cost conscious? Do you want to be in the midst of bars and restaurants or somewhere more residential /quieter? Are you looking for more diversity in your neighbors (LGBTQ+, racial diversity, etc)? Do you need to be on/near a particular train or metra line? Is parking important? etc.
SC1 - used to live a block from there. Don’t do it, you’ll be miserable and bored
1. Old Town 2. Lincoln Park
River North sucks going out at night unless you love clubbing but has fancy restaurants , Fulton Market if you’re older than 28. Whatever you do don’t live in the loop, everything there shuts down at 9pm. Also south loop sucks as well
Check out Gold Coast and Lincoln park along lake shore dr, plenty of solid high rises there
Old Town
Pitch for the Gold Coast -
It’s like a five minute walk to Old Town so you get the fun without the mess. And it’s quieter than River North with a lower price tag. It also grows with you. I moved into the GC when I was 22 and I’m now 27. It’s working out really well.
Pilsen.
Gold Coast.
Streeterville. Get the calm with the night life a 15 min walk away
Simply bad advice, streeterville is a full on tourist trap full of nothing but designer stores, fast food chains and overpriced “fancy” restaurants. Absolutely no character. Only thing it has going for it is you can likely walk to work from there and escape to better neighborhoods north of it but walking from streeterville to old town is quite the haul, more like 25+ min
Really depends on what you value, bc mid20s can mean a lot of things. Income also hugely important.
Parties/Lake access - Streeterville/Old Town
Neighborhood/parties/shopping - Lincoln Park/Wicker Park
Food/Bars - West Loop
Cheap/Bars/Cubs - LakeView
Rogers Park! Lake front living, comparatively affordable, close to transit, cheap food since it's by a college campus, lots of community events, parks, beaches, shops.

This is for your 40s
What are you optimizing for? And how can I convince you that it’s all in River North
Old town
Gold Coast
