This is so hard without knowing:
Where do you work
-and what is the maximum length of time you are willing to spend in traffic on a daily basis
What is your budget
-are you willing to be in a condo or townhouse
-do you need your own space and a big lot
What are you looking for in your community
-walkable?
-school district?
-convenience of and access to restaurants and groceries
-quick access to beaches
-quick access to hiking trails
I am SoCal born and raised and have lived in the San Gabriel Valley nearly the entirety of my life. It's about a 14 mile commute to downtown, but that equates to 45 minutes to an hour twenty in traffic. I HATE the west side and the valley, so they are not options I would ever consider.
Could not agree more.
Studio City / Sherman Oaks - if your budget allows
Santa Clarita, especially west of the 5. Some of the best public schools, low crime, good parks and activities . Especially good elementary schools but the high schools are decent too. If you have to drive to downtown or the west side every day, it would be draining but if you were remote or hybrid it’s a great place to raise a family.
Stevenson Ranch, West Ranch, & FivePoints. I also like the areas northwest of Copper Hill west of McBean. Those areas are inside the City of Santa Clarita which could have some advantages over the unincorporated areas west of the 5.
At OP, are you looking at in the city of LA, or LA country? Lots of factors of course. City of LA, playa vista is a great neighborhood. Safe overall and a lot of people with young kids. Looking at LA county, there’s a bunch of places that are relatively safe, with great schools, like porter ranch, Cerritos, Diamond bar, rancho Palos verdes, Manhattan beach, pasadena, SGV, etc.

Knowing that there are many variables and considerations my wife and our two kids (2 and 6 years old) are very happy in Agoura Hills. It’s a suburb to the north, just past Calabasas. It’s very safe and has good schools, lots of parks and access to the outdoors.

West hills
South Bay. Decently close to commuting centers, great school.
