I'm out as being bi and poly to the adults, but the kids only know I talk about my girlfriend. I had a parent complain about it, but my admin shut it down and commented that he knows another teacher that child has talks about his fiance all the time, and she has never complained. I feel lucky to be someplace I am accepted, but nervous as we are getting new admin this year.
my first teaching gig, only 5 years ago, the hiring manager heard that I (gasp!) had a photo of my family on my desk. Within days the pitchforks came for me. if it hadn't been for my principal, that would have been it. but then the next year, they axed her, and then got me once my protector was gone.
it's never the kids you have to worry about. they don't give a sh*t. it's the few but vocal Neanderthals.
I'm not out at school. This school system is accepting of gay and lesbian teachers but I'm not sure their stance on polyamorous relationships.
The last time I was out at school it didn’t go well, but so far this year has been fine. There has been a gay art teacher at the high school forever and he is much beloved.
I'm out at my school and people are supportive of it. I'm very fortunate that we have policies that protect both staff and students who identify as LGBTQ. We also have measures to protect our trans students as well. I will say that we could be more open and out about is, however. In the future, I would love to open a PRISM club on campus to better strengthen and empower our student support of our LGBTQ+ population.
I am out at work. My admin is very supportive. However I do not disclose that information to my students or their families. I am concerned that there will be a backlash.
