Big law tax associates - how long do you typically spend marking up a purchase agreement? I know this will vary depending on class year and experience, how the deal is staffed, complexity of deal, etc, but curious what some of the ranges are or even how much you might bill for a deal start to finish.

First turn, probably 5 hours on average.

That sounds about right IME

A little over 3 hours on the first round and then it goes down on every round as issues get settled. Totals can vary wildly depending on how much push back we get and the complexity of the deal.

Agree that totals can vary wildly

Looking for your career advice! I currently work as a Content Marketing Manager but would love to move into a Head of Marketing/Marketing Director role. What would be your best tips to make that move? I assume it will take time of course, but I'm wondering what/where I should invest in terms of my training and next career steps. Thanks!

Currently going through some negations on an internal role. I’m currently at 88k and they offered me 100k for a position that requires a lot more work. Do you guys think it’s easier to land a higher salary when applying externally rather than internally? Also this is for a territory sales management role. They stated 120k+ is extremely high for that role. What do you guys think? Playing the game?

Junior biglaw tax associate here. Considering an internal transfer vs lateral to NYC from a smaller market. Any firms in the v20 I should avoid/look into? I have pretty reasonable hours at my current firm and trying to avoid going to a sweatshop. Interested in international tax and hoping to avoid m&a. Firms I’m considering: Latham, Gibson, Sidley, Goodwin, Milbank. Thank you all!

Anyone have any thoughts on a fair salary for a part time virtual tax prep-focused position? I’ve been made an offer for south of 800 hours/year (fluctuating for seasonal ebb and flow, of course), and I’m curious whether it’s a decent offer or not. I have 13 years of experience in a big box franchise where I’ve handled complex returns from day 1. 30% of my workload has been 1120/1120S/1065 and the rest higher-level 1040s and a few 1041s & 990s. I’ll be bringing 75-100 clients with me.

Hi all! I’m applying to NYU tax llm and I’m pretty confident I can get in,but it’s unlikely I’ll receive a scholarship. I’m working at a non big4 consulting firm for about 1.5yrs now, doing mainly international with some M&A exposure. I want to do llm because I still want to shoot for biglaw. I have a small kid so it’ll be hard to do the program part time. Should I quit my current job and enroll full time? Meaning lose 1yr salary and taking on a job security risk. TIA!

Has anyone dealt with stuffing allocation in a non-hedge fund context? It seems even in the HF world the law is fuzzy in using aggregate reverse 704c principles in stuffing allocations. Like, sure, the market is there but no authority really blessed it (other than some Cravath partner’s article in Tax Notes in 2013). If we are talking asset class that isn’t really like marketable securities but might be able to treat it similarly solely by virtue of, say, valuation on a quarterly basis (contd)
