Billing low hours at a V5 law firm as a recent junior lateral (billing anywhere from 10-30 hours/week). There’s not a ton of work to go around in my practice group at the moment. Should I be worried? How long of a runway do laterals typically have to get on track with hours?

Unreliable coworker help - There’s a coordinator on my team who assists me and the other strategists but literally every time I ask her to help with something she says yes & then waits until the last minute to tell me she wasn’t able to do it/makes up an emergency excuse. Trying to be understanding but this is getting ridiculous- she/parents/dog/boyfriend are sick (8x), forgot about another urgent project (10x), WiFi is down or power is out RIGHT when I ask for help (5x).

Leaving after one year to another biglaw firm?

Should I be concerned about abusing adderell? I was depressed/lacking motivation and needed to get some deals done and my hours up ASAP. Convinced my doctor I had ADHD, so I now have a legal prescription. I feel so much better, and am getting so much accomplished. No judgement please. We all know this is a high stress, high pressure environment.

Random partner asked a litigation-related question to a partner I frequently work with (i’m a transactional associate). My partner cc’d me and said for me to briefly look. Asked the library. They got me a great case. Sent it back. Now the random partner is asking for more cases in another circuit.

If you are a first year in a stub year, and significantly under billable hours requirement, do firms typically still give pro rated bonus? Do first year stub associates really ever hit their pro rated hours in those 2-3 months?

I just want a change of scenery because my current firm is bleeding good associates / not giving great training imo / and just seems small. Would lateralling this early feasible? Name the most ridiculous micro-managing by partners that you experience.

I’ll go first: MP told me that on initial emails, I am always to start with “Hello [name],” but after the initial email, I am not to address her by name again in the same thread. Initial greeting can only be “Hello [name] ” because just first name is too brisk and a “Hi [name]” is too informal. Had a 5 minute, in depth conversation as to why she prefers it this way…

I'm thinking of leaving firm life and applying to the NY SG's office. Anyone heard anything about it (work environment, prestige, etc.)?

Anyone else just sitting around waiting for the ax to drop? I'm a soon to be 2nd year corporate associate who has seen work completely dry up. My utilization held pretty steady around 50% immediately after shutdown, but August was below 15 billables with no appreciable work in the pipeline. Aside from letting people know I'm available and doing pro-bono/CLE, it's starting to feel like a serious "covidcation" leading to termination.

Should I take more initiative? It’s my stub year and I’m getting worried. My hours have been super low the past two months, I’m talking like maybe billing 3-4 hours a day and billing no hours on multiple days. I ask for work but the tasks I get don’t require a lot of time. I realize sheer number of cases doesn’t tell the whole story… obviously you can be buried on one massive case. I’m finding it hard to jump back and forth between everything I have going on right now, though, but I don’t know if the answer is to just deal with it.

Fellow Big Law colleagues, need help on how to hansle a situation (that shouldn’t even be happening imo).
I used to work for Partner A in project financing and made the internal switch to work in Investment Funds team.
One case with Partner A remained, and though I stayed on, it was mostly to advise in Investment Funds, as he had been looping in another associate from his team.
This week I had to send an e-mail about InvF, and he complained to me that he hadn’t seen the draft…how do I respond?

There’s a practice group that I’ve been trying to find work in but whenever I volunteer to help, I always get roped in to do non billable work. In the beginning it was fine but now I’m feeling it’s never going to amount to actual work. Any tips to get more involved without all the non billables and how to approach this gently?
