Litigators—how many different cases are you on?

Been feeling spread too thin lately but I don’t know whats typical. Curious what others do. And would you mind sharing whether you’re a junior, midlevel, partner, etc??

I realize sheer number of cases doesn’t tell the whole story… obviously you can be buried on one massive case. I’m finding it hard to jump back and forth between everything I have going on right now, though, but I don’t know if the answer is to just deal with it.

Second year—on about 8 cases (each with different levels of involvement) and doing small assignments for a few others randomly

It’s tough jumping back and forth I really struggled the first few months but just have to get better at organizing. Every sunday I make a to do list for the week for each case in order of priority based on deadlines, and do the same each morning to help keep me on track. I also have a white board in my office with each case listed with major deadlines listed under it to further help keep me on track

Over 200. 😂

3rd year. 97 cases on my own.

Third year—probably 15-20 cases but lateraled to new firm January 2022. Level of involvement varies significantly, with some being all consuming for days and weeks at a time, while others I could forget I’m on if I’m not on top of it.

5th year - around 75 cases of my own, about a third of which I have help from a junior.

1st year, 25 active on which I’m the only attorney other than a partner

2nd, am on about 6 cases. Spend most of my time on two complex ones

Any insight on Brewer (either office, generally curious about the firm). I assume comp after year 1 is discretionary, rather than lock-step, given the size of the firm. Would appreciate happiness, horror stories, of whatever “firm culture” falls between the two. DM me if you don’t want to share publicly.

Are there any books or other resources that mid levels/seniors/counsel/partners on here have found helpful for the project management / managing junior attorney aspects of your job?

How did you give notice you were lateraling to people you like? Particularly if you haven't been there that long?

I'm lateraling to another firm because frankly I think the management of this one is terrible, but the people (and individual partners) I actually work with are awesome. I've only been here for about 18 months, so I imagine that short time frame will make it extra awkward 😬

Im a third year and my current firm isn't bad and I'm pretty comfortable here. Im satisfied most of the time. There is one firm I've been keeping my eyes on because of its similarities to where I currently am (nice people, similar hours, culture).

Im a bit burned out now and I would love to take a long break. I'm hoping I can take a break (2 months) between the transition but is this a good reason to move though? Would you move in my situation? Im sure there will be a signing bonus.

Should I take more initiative? It’s my stub year and I’m getting worried. Explain to me like I’m 5. Why does the monthly billable hours goal on things like Intellistat change month to month. I’m not hitting hours this year. Last month goal was 158. This months goal is 180.

Assuming I’m justified in thinking I deserve a higher bonus/salary, who should I talk to about potential raises (HR, management, etc.)? Should I say that I’m considering other options? (Details below)
