Seeking advice: I am a young sales consultant and sales engineer working for a tech startup company. I have 6 years of sales experience. And I have been helping run my family business for the past 10 years. I was intially interviewed for a senior account executive position at a $70k offer. Instead they told me I needed more training and hired me as a Junior account executive at a $50k salary + commission. Today is my 6th month mark and I have done very well. Please help! I’m a CRC who manages Investigator- led clinical research projects and I want to transition to a PM role in industry (I would slightly prefer not a PM role in clinical trials since I don’t have clinical trial experience.) Any tips on leaving a firm “correctly”? Was about to go “of counsel” with my firm of 6 years, but then another firm whose partners I really respect (and personally like) offered me a partnership position. I predict my current bosses will *flip* (cut off file access immediately, try to beat me to calling my clients, etc.), so how do I set myself up for a successful transition?

Anyone have any idea when the hiring freeze might end within AWS ProServ? I’m currently at Amazon and have a TS clearance, PMP & CSM. Anyone know salary expectations at Clyde & Co in Miami? I’m a second year.

I am a sixth-year associate overseeing a second year. They are an exceptionally good associate. I am honestly shocked at the work product I receive and the way they go above and beyond. The issue I have is that they sometimes take awhile to turn things around. For example, I ask for a draft response to the client, and they take three-four days. I know they’re busy, but I would like to address this in a positive way. Any suggestions?

Did first set of redlines for a partner. Have ten years experience doing what this partner does but I am new to working with him. Said I did about a 7 out of 10 on that job. Not sure how to feel about that. What say you all? :) Keep in mind I asked for a 1 to 10 because I cannot talk to him about it for a week or so.

When and how do you push back on people senior to you? Fifth year dealing with supersenior associate (11th year) who completely lacks good judgment & common sense. One of those super smart but impractical types. As just one example, he recently called me to tell me to call someone who’s on vacation and ask them to send a calendar invite. I offered to send myself but apparently that wouldn’t work (presumably because it would be efficient & make sense.) At what point (and how) do I Just Say No?

To all associates whose firms haven’t announced special bonuses (or have strict requirements for them that you don’t meet): Are you planning to leave? How mad are you?

I recently lateraled into Big Law. Most of my colleagues are homegrown. My shift did involve a big change in practice area, and there's work that I haven't done before that I now have to do.

But, sometimes I feel stupid here, even for work which I have done previously. It's like I'm unable to understand instructions the first time around. And I have seen my colleagues getting annoyed by that. It's like I've become dumb. In my defence, I could say they're giving half assed instructions.

Explain to me like I’m 5. Why does the monthly billable hours goal on things like Intellistat change month to month. I’m not hitting hours this year. Last month goal was 158. This months goal is 180.

To sleep or not to sleep? That is the question... that I’m contemplating right now. At what point is sleep the better choice in the middle of a very busy week? Will I be more productive tomorrow if I call it quits and actually get a full 8 hours tonight? Or do I keep churning out half-assed work product until the wee hours of the night in hopes of catching up, since I’m already two days behind where I need to be?

What monetary goal/target are you telling yourself to hit before quitting big law?

What was the hardest class year for you? I used to think first year was by far the hardest but now I’m a third year and I’m really feeling the pressure to step up. I work in finance and at this point I’m expected to handle closing documents, manage first years, draft some portions of major docs, etc. I feel like I’m always frazzled, constantly second guessing if I handled something correctly and anxious to answer calls from clients/OC. The worst part is I think people can tell I’m a mess....
