It's funny, when we first started doing video meetings being on camera drove me crazy. I just felt so awkward. Now I don't even care. Given a choice I'd rather leave it off, but it's like a dumb peer pressure thing to have it on. I think going back to simple phone calls with no video would be a good idea, but people are just stuck on video.
Pro
It really is about peer pressure. Nothing more, nothing less. And it’s Wilde that we’ve all accepted that.
I prefer camera on, if I had to pick between the two. Recently, several people on my call all had tech problems and ended up calling in (off-camera, obviously). It was a pleasant change to have to go “old school” and listen to people just based on their voices. Like an old landline telephone.
Pro
What is it that you prefer about camera on versus camera off? What’s the difference between the two?
Camera on at the beginning to make a human connection, but I turn it off because I’m eating snacks. All the time. I wouldn’t want to subject viewers to watching my pie hole slapping opening and closing. Mic off to prevent the cement mixer toilet sound of me taking meetings while on the can.
