Career FOMO is hitting me hard lately. Two of my coworkers recently announced they’re moving to big-name firms, and another just got a huge promotion. Meanwhile, I’m still in the same role I’ve been in for two years—but the thing is, I actually like my job. I love the team, the work, and the flexibility, but I can’t help comparing myself to others and wondering if I’m falling behind. It’s hard to stay confident in your own pace when everyone else seems to be rushing ahead. Have you dealt with this? How do you focus on your own path without getting distracted by everyone else’s?

I get the feeling of FOMO but it’s really just an illusion. In the long run things are going to even out - one or two years of difference is not going to change much.
I also view it as having a stronger network since my friends have more impact in other areas where I might go to one day. It’s really a win win for them and me.
Plus good team and work is hard to find. The grass is not always greener on the other side.

If you love your job, then I wouldn’t even give it another thought. It’s so hard to find all of those things combined, most of us are here dreaming of that winning combo!

I always true back to what is my purpose and what do I actually want for myself (independent of other people)? I agre, I get it from time to time, but because I do this activity of documenting it, it helps me to remain true to myself and where I want to go. Because maybe to your point if you did get the same opportunity, you may be miserable.

Stay the course, especially if you're happy and have work/life happiness going on. It's not a race to anywhere, so enjoy the path you're on and know that if you want to move, the time will come.

I’ve definitely had similar feelings in the past. I asked myself if I was truly happy with where I was in both my career and personal life. If the answer was yes, I reminded myself that comparing my journey to others wouldn’t bring me any happiness.

I took a promotion three years ago because I wanted to keep up with everyone else growing and now I hate it and wish I stayed in the role I loved.

I'm SVP/strategy for a PR agency. I moved into PR, Healthcare, and Strategic Planning only 3 years ago. An agency recruiter is trying to convince me to move into a GSVP account role, assuring me "at that level it's all strategy." (I dont think she understands the words she's using. Or that I'm qualified). But long-term, knowing account roles are so much more plentiful than brand planning in PR, I'm wondering if I should start thinking about account. Anyone here moved from strategy to account?
