Most times its a client request.
Often its part of the idea.
Sometimes its a lazy creative
*points at a certain ECD at McCann*
Idc what they are but to me they are always really funny
It’s only interesting when they’re there for a conceptual reason.
It’s always a mixed bag. Recently, I loved Peter Dinklage and Morgan Freeman for Doritos/Mountain Dew. After seeing them do it, it was impossible to imagine anyone else. Also liked Zoe Kravitz for Mich Ultra. She fit the brand.
we have a joke on my team, kinda like portlandia’s “put a bird on it!” but instead, it’s “put chance the rapper on it!”
The thing about working with famous actors is you discover they are often famous for a reason. In that they are really good at what they do. Once you work with a pro it’s really hard to go back to some scale commercial actor.
When a movie or series cast a celeb it’s just a normal part of making an entertaining product. That our business treats it as a defect is pure self loathing.
Post halftime there were quite a few good ones that I LOL’d to. Budweiser with Post Malone, Alexa with Ellen D, oh and Trump’s ad. That one was REALLY funny.
Agree. Although this is the only one Ive seen so far that actually makes some sense for the product/concept:

All of the above?
It’s driven by culture but also laziness
^^^^^ more excited to post their selfie with lil nas than make the work good.
Not an idea. Nor is celebrity as voiceover. Talking to you, Wieden/McDonald’s.
@SAD2, welcome to working on McDonalds. All they want is to see they’re mediocre food
Dont get me started on that terrible Big Lebowski ad last year
Meh...lebowski was a betrayal. Shining is a disappointment
The client has a celebrity they want to shmooze with
yup
Not an idea. Maybe a means to an end.
Depends. If you think “awright, awright, awright” is an idea then yes ;)
Nike been doin this since ages ago. Bout time other brands caught on. The problem I see is consistency. Nike got it. Most others don’t.
Either celebrities as idea or IP as idea. "I know, Star Wars!"
Celebrities hold meaning, and that meaning can be used in support of an idea. In those cases, I get it. Celeb for celeb’s sake thought pfffftttt
lazy lazy lazy
Also that’s what you get for clients who just want someone with the last name Jenner to post about them on instagram as a “brand objective”
