Chose big4 transfer to NYC over M7 MBA. Did I make right decision?

Got into Booth and Kellogg, but I eventually chose my big4 financial services consulting transfer offer from home (Asia) office to NYC office. My salary will be mid 100k.

Not sure if I made the right choice.. In 2 years I could be getting MBB offer (or not) which may have much better path to higher salary potential.

Hope Im going with the right one

I think financially and experience wise it makes a lot of sense. MBA might give you network but these days it doesn’t give you the same opportunities as in the past.

Chose career over MBA and made equity partner, no regrets

MBA is a brand, network, and fun, but also huge debt unless you get scholarships. Really helps if you want to get a job in US (and don’t have a previous US degree), but considering that you’d already have US experience via your employer that’s not a big issue. Salary at MBB post MBA is closer to 200k. So considering debt probably doesn’t make sense.

like

+ you could always apply later if you wanted

like

Nah you made the right decision. Value of degrees is eroding fast. Why spend 200k and 2 years not earning on something that is both uncertain and only marginally better

like

Never look back at the path not taken because you have no idea where it would really have led. Most people get an MBA to make a career pivot. If you are happy with your career, it's not needed. If at some point if having one is a box you need checked, there are cheaper ways to check that box. Best of luck!

MBA is become a complete waste of time IMO. If you want buyside you just need to be lucky, if you want a technical sell side role just do a STEM BSc.

At big 4 MBAs command a higher salary and they are the first to go during layoffs from what I’ve observed.

like

M7 MBA with good interviews would have gotten you into MBB, 200k comp, better trajectory and end state than Big4. What you did was take the safe route, which is fine. But was it the best? Depends on how good and how ambitious you are.

Emphasis on “could be”

You made the right choice. Just graduated from a T10 MBA with massive debt. I should’ve stayed in the market and just gone part-time if I still felt strongly about the MBA

MBA and MBB in trouble due to AI.

Counterpoint - you’re making less than post mba comp from those schools and missing an opportunity to trade up

Of? MBA - I did mention brand. MBB - yes brand matters here too. But I don’t think it’s impossible to get into MBB without MBA. you can also choose a different route and go to JPMC Amazon etc and still get good salary and brand. MBB is not pinnacle of career choices.

5 yrs ago, MBA might have been a better bet. Now, too much risk, especially given the visa situation.

Let your future employer offset much of the MBA cost once you get a sponsor in your corner. It doesn’t have to be either-or.

Any insight on Brewer (either office, generally curious about the firm). I assume comp after year 1 is discretionary, rather than lock-step, given the size of the firm. Would appreciate happiness, horror stories, of whatever “firm culture” falls between the two. DM me if you don’t want to share publicly.
