I haven’t done that long but I missed my son’s first steps because of a shoot. It’s tough.
For me, I have to remember this is how I support my family and give them what they need. So if I’m going to be away from my family I need to do the best job I can to make the production as beneficial to my family as possible.
This is the answer.
Hi! I’m actually on the other side of this where my husband leaves frequently for a week at a time. It definitely is hard on him, but here are some things that have worked for us.
He acknowledges that it’s difficult for me as well to be at home with our two little ones. He FaceTime at night and sometimes can be there for bedtime even if we just set it up on a counter or shelf in the room for a couple minutes. If you have a yoto, get those make your own cards and record yourself reading a book or singing a song so your kids can listen to it. we also send videos and pictures back-and-forth of our days and the kids when possible.
it can definitely be hard and travel is difficult But try to get as much sleep as you can so when you’re home you’re not exhausted from your travel.
I have 3 kids. What I’ve learned is nothing is set in stone. Talk to your team. Have a CD cover the tech scout. Find the flights that would work for your timing. Work something out with your producer “hey, can I do casting remotely? And then fly in for the pre-pro and shoot? I have a little one at home I need to get back to.”
Find a solution that works for your family AND agency. Fly back home on the weekend. Talk to your producer. There are very easy solutions to make this happen. It could be a little more money for another round trip flight. Or it could be saving money on hotel. These things are just line items to a producer working with a set of money.
Ask for help. See if someone can cover you for some of that time. Work with your producer to see what can be done remote. Figure out if there’s a weekend you can fly back for.
Fly home for weekends / scout days / down days
Only works if you are shooting somewhere where close. And more and more productions are international now (if you are USA based) which makes this nearly impossible as the agency won’t pay for it.
Depending where I was, I’d fly home on the weekends or fly them out for a weekend. Did a gig out of town for 5 weeks when my first kid was only 5 months. It was like coming home to a different person.
It’s hard. But there’s more post work being done remotely since the pandemic. Bad for the work in my opinion but better for home life. I try and only be on the road when it’s absolutely necessary.
