Curious if anyone practices environmental compliance/regulatory here who’s be willing to share what makes someone good in this practice area (that may not extend to other areas, ie science background). What are the keys to success or key temperaments /interests in this practice area? Considering a pivot…

Not quite sure I understand the question but I’ll give it a shot:

A willingness to learn a bit of the science/ work with engineers has helped me a ton. Also interest in keeping up with changes in the law (vs for example, commercial litigator where the law may not change as often). The ball is always moving so adaptability is key

Oh and when all else fails, remembering the attorneys job is to advise on the legal requirements and potential risks. The clients decision whether to comply (or accept the risk of noncompliance) is a business decision

Additional Posts in Environmental law

Does anyone on here recommend making a switch from law to policy work? Is that looked down upon in the legal field or is there some rewarding features of utilizing one’s JD in the policy space? I’ve been interviewing in the policy space and am really passionate about clean energy policy. I guess I’m also wondering if practicing law in the energy regulatory space is worthwhile given my interests.

Would it be difficult to switch from environmental litigation to environmental regulatory work? I’ve been at my firm now for a little over a year and it is all litigation. The environmental regulatory job postings I’ve seen require at least a few years of regulatory work. I am not sure how to make that transition. Any thoughts?

Honest opinions please—will oil and gas trade association experience be looked down upon by future environmental law firms/ non profits/ the clean energy space? Or will it be looked as a plus?
