You think s&o is more immune to impact from AI?
I could see it because S&O sits closer with execs and if you play you cards right you can have a lot of influence and be in execs favor. But I think for Google specifically, PMs hold a lot of power (but if you would need to down level and become more junior, you become more focused on execution/taker of orders which is what AI would replace).
My advice tend to be follow the leader. If you have strong rapport with a good revenue generating leader (L9/L10+) who is doing well in G, stay put. If not, can try PM, can always pivot back. I think yes AI will inevitably lead to layoffs across all functions, and playing good politics and aligning yourself well is key to surviving these things.
How's strategy at google vs bcg? Less slide making lol? Curious to know what a typical day looks like
Thanks!!
Switch. Not because the career path is safer, but because it is fulfilling to explore interesting career paths. You can switch back to S&O later if you don't like PM, but it is hard to land a Google PM role, so it is worth trying it out. At the very least, if you try it, you will probably have fewer regrets a few years from now.
What was your application process to get a PM offer?
How do you suggest getting a role like this
Role at faang, primarily S&O
