Currently working with a CD who is just not smart, has no sense of humor, and is crazy out of touch with social and creative trends(we work in social so like…how?)

Back when I was a junior, I used to think all creative directors got there by being smart, creative, and strong leaders. But I guess anyone can fail up 😩

There are people in this industry who are not talented but get by on politics, charm and other people’s talent. When I first got into this industry, I thought I’d be surrounded by people with good and varied taste in things like music, movies, comedy, art but it’s not necessarily the case. Those people exist but they aren’t as common as you’d think. Which is part of the reason why advertising is what it is right now. When you find people who are talented and have good taste, stick with them. They are rarer than they should be.

Totally agree! I’ve worked with stellar people and as well as those that would struggle to fill the salt shaker at The Cheesecake Factory but are toadies beyond compare. What I’ve discovered is that stellar people tend to attract and grow other amazing people. The bad ones find themselves isolated in the best of situations because they get exposed - either because their work is awful or others refuse to work for them. At worst, politics can often insulate the bad ones, but not forever. Find the good ones and keep them near.

can you elaborate? Are they just making you do their non-social ideas? Is it bad feedback?

it can totally be frustrating when the cd isn’t getting the idea and you’re the subject matter expert! I would just choose your battles, develop more rapport with the CD so they trust you when they don’t know the trend and make friends across departments (especially social strategy) to help defend your most favorite concepts. I’m always a DM away btw. Good luck!

Ultimately I think we will be ok, but I know he's hurting / stressed / and could use a supportive partner.

Need some feedback! So I was forced to move jobs about 6 months ago due to reorg and the new leader opting to bring their existing EA with them, without even meeting me. If stayed at the company but accepted an offer for a job outside of the department I was in. I’ve now been asked by a manager from my old department to apply for a job they’re opening that would be a 2 step promotion. She thought she got my managers permission to approach me (see comments)

Can someone explain how billable hours work? At a new agency and although I had to fill timesheets at my previous agencies, they were mainly used to ensure we weren’t over servicing a client/for setting the appropriate retainer for contract renewals. I get the impression that billing to the agency admin code isn’t recommended, and my manager said he bills everything to client codes, but that doesn’t make sense to me .
