I'm not making enough to pay back my student loans in a reasonable amount of time. I feel like salaries in this field were so much higher a while ago. I don't know what to expect anymore.

Depends on your standard of what “good” means. To some (also depends on your area COL), $65k is freaking awesome and to some $100k is not enough. If you don’t include your salary and location, it’s difficult for others to criticize you 🙂. Unless you are making $30k (with a degree), then it’s low no matter where you are located.
I don’t think most of us feel like we make enough but a lot of it is because the pay scale hasn’t changed much compared to the inflation and cost of living growth. A 100k now is equivalent to about 80k about 5yrs ago when you use an inflation calculator.
It is really depend on industry. I am a data scientist now but built upon my domain as a space system engineer because of my degree in Mechanical so I think I am making twice as much as I thought going in.
I started out on the low side, but I feel I'm making pretty good money now. If I compare it to how inflation has ruined everything, then yeah, I'm not making that much and I'm thankful to have a spouse that is making similar money. If you're making so little, you might want to start applying at other places to see if you can get a bump.
I’m at $160k with 12 years of experience out of college (plus like 4 years of internship). For a position in the Midwest, that’s pretty good and I can’t complain.
It's really based on the type of field you're working with. I work for a box company and I make $45 an hour for waiting on calls and doing PLC during the mean time. If it's a food company I would see more pay for it have a vital time to make sure things are up in running sooner then later for the food to not go bad. I'm in Minnesota and we tend to get paid a lot more just in general and the taxes aren't as bad as people make it seem but, it's really based on where the location you're working too is what I noticed if you get paid more or not for your work. If you have the experience, Rock Well is a great company to work for. My uncle works for them and they really treat you well and it's an exciting work place from what I hear from him.
It's a thing of the past, unless you don't start your own business, or switch towards computer related jobs your pay will keep on reducing.
It's all about demand and supply.
Applied mechanical engineering is all about using preset standards to design something. It's a pointless exercise.
Transition towards AI, or Automation, with your experienceay be you get more then your expectations.
