8 years is a pretty good sweet spot. Senior enough you get real authority. Young enough you don’t have ego issues being a Lt and can also accumulate the in-house expertise people are often looking for for higher level in-house gigs.
In short: 8 years at a firm strikes me as an ideal time to make the move in-house. And make no mistake: A smart / well-planned in-house career can result in even more success than the average partner enjoys. It ain’t the end of the road or ambition. It’s just a different road.

It depends on your goals and how important certain things are to you. I will say that I think it gets easier in some ways as you get more senior.

From things I’ve read on various bowls, it seems there is limited upside after 6 years or so. You typically need more experience than it takes to make partner to really move up in-house and those who have been in-house longer have a leg up. Of course, it’s possible to move over as a partner but that seems pretty rare.
If comparing apples to apples, no. BigLaw is the top of the law firm world so only compares directly to top of the in-house world and answer is demonstrably no.
Also, once you hit 8 years it will start to get much harder to go in-house. Less roles, better competition of folks going in-house for the first time and now competing with folks already in-house.

Maybe the in-house job opportunities that will come your way are not that different but the money you made while at BL probably did before you take a step back
