Did you cut off family or friends based on who they voted for? If so, why?

I never knew republicans casually anyway but I certainly cut off extended family who I don’t like and who post reprehensible things. It’s not simply who they voted for but a lot of the rhetoric around it. Like I don’t want to hangout with racists or bigots. Maybe not all who voted for him are, but the ones I know certainly are.

Not based on who they voted for, but my mom is actively cheering the downfall of our government, which (1) is fundamentally at odds with my profession; and (2) includes my spouse's job as a federal worker. Being told we're some of "the good ones," or merely collateral damage in a larger plan, is not good enough for me. Especially with kids in the picture, I want them to be surrounded by love and support, and this isn't it.

Exactly. Posts like these are so confusing to me because you can’t un-couple the moral and views from the vote. Like the people voting this way actually believe bad things that are diametrically opposed to my values.

I keep hearing some version of this and I just want to say that cutting people off based on who they voted for is not normal behavior. Trump is a reprehensible person. But over 77 million people voted for him. And not all 77 million of those people are reprehensible. The idea of surrounding yourself only with people who see things exactly as you do is bizarre.

No i think all 77 mm are reprehensible

I’m genuinely confused at whoever would want to be friends with or have a relationship with racists or homophobes.

I’ve stopped welcoming them into my home as regularly and have banned political discussions. Said MAGA relative can’t seem to keep their mouth shut in terms of saying hateful and offensive things - almost seems like she wants to gloat, when we have suffered very real negative consequences personally as a result of the current admin (see: salary cuts and job instability).

She’s getting invited over less frequently and we strongly enforce a no-politics rule. If she can’t keep her mouth shut, she’s not welcome

like

lol why don’t MAGA people realize that supporting Trump makes you a next level leper/idiot. Yes you deserve to be cut off. It’s like they think he’s Romney, I really don’t get it.

I avoid extremists from both sides that can’t have a respectful conversation about differing opinions

Did not cut off, but there’s an indefinite moratorium on political/state of affairs discussions. It has never been this bad where family members and friends have been do divided and hurt as a result of that division.

I just don’t talk politics with people that I fundamentally disagree with. Everyone is so dug in I just don’t see the point.

I think I managed to convince my MIL not to vote for Trump. Definitely send her lots of information showing how he neither benefits her or aligns with her stated values.
FIL was cut off long ago because he was not a good person. I almost climbed out of a moving car to get away from a racist tirade he went on.

I distance myself based on their overall beliefs. One relative is a conspiracy theorist and always talks about far fetched things. I keep a healthy distance. If a person is saying things like get those people out of our country or those people won't assimilate, I cut them off I'm black and don't need to be in contact with racists. If someone says they think we need to spend more conservatively i don't really care I'm like fair. It's a case by case basis.

Depends on if I think they voted for him because they are (i) woefully informed or (ii) a bad person who fully understands the implications

like

Ironically, not cutting them off is the reason he’s president.

The people saying “people who voted for Trump are idiots/lepers” and “should be cut off” are the same ones that were shocked when 77M people voted for him lol. Keep living in your own little reality.

like

I’m the one that said that and I was not surprised in the slightest and thought Kamala didn’t stand a chance. All 77m are idiots and I’m sure learning more and more why every single day. Whether it’s about being on the right side of history or not, you voted for an imbecile who in less than a quarter has made significant headway dismantling our constitution so yes idiots/lepers and no we don’t have to talk to you.

It’s less of who they voted for more of a difference in our religious, ethical, morality differences I’ve found the veil is off on who they are. Example some claim to be so Christian but are full of hate for anyone that is different from them. I’ve found some to hold deeply rooted racism and misogynist feelings. They have o problem saying horrible things then when o attempt to counter- especially when their words really are demeaning to e as a person - I’m over them. I’m done being polite back to them. I haven’t fully cut ties but there are rarely call’s, texts, invites. The family has split with those with aligning views socializing on their own.

Yes, I have cut people off, but not necessarily over trump specifically. It is one thing to choose to befriend someone who has a different idea of how to allocate funds for education or war, but I cannot fundamentally be friends with someone who actively supports laws and beliefs that oppress me or endanger me.

I can be your co-worker or relative because that's not my choice, but choosing to spend my time and money with someone who I do not get along with sounds like a silly investment and another conversation to add to my therapist.

My entire family is very conservative and, to my deep dismay and disappointment, are now all Trump fans. I was raised with Rush Limbaugh on the radio, etc. But I never felt entirely comfortable with some of the conservative stances and then in my 20s-30s fully converted to being liberal/progressive. So that said, no - I haven’t cut off my entire family. But we have an unspoken agreement to not discuss politics. And I choose to surround myself in my daily life with people whose values align with mine, so there’s no one else in my social circles that would be an issue.

like

Same here!

No. I’m capable of listening to someone I vehemently disagree with and either politely engage in a discussion where I will truly try to understand their position or I politely change the subject. As a society we need to get back to a place where we can disagree with one another amicably. Politics isn’t the most important thing in life. People who get upset about politics, on any side of the spectrum, seem to be living in misery. Just let it go, you’ll be so much happier for it.

I've cut people off and blocked them on socials in the past but not over politics. In fact, I just recommended someone for a very prestigious job who is my polar opposite politically but who I know is a good person who would do a fantastic job. We have forgotten the importance of listening to and learning from one another. We seem to have a violent reaction to those who don't think like us... as if it meant the person was attacking us directly for not thinking as we do. Diversity of thought is dying. Tolerance has been lost. Sad times we live in for sure.

It's interesting to note that most who make a living out of politics are actually friends regardless of their political leanings. Need we remember the close friendship between the late Justices Scalia and Ginsburg. Polar opposites but mature enough to become good friends. We ought to learn a thing or two from them!
