In my firm, the Chairman is like the Queen - goes on world tour around all our offices to hold "morale boosting town halls" and attend all the various offices' anniversaries and landmarks. He works mostly with the HR Director and COO to get mental wellness initiatives off the ground - stuff that are bells and whistles as the associates in my firm call them.
The Managing Partner is the one that deals with actual BD or new Practice Group development initiatives etc - more in line with chargeable work.
It probably depends on the firm but I’d say managing partner. It’s like comparing the president to the senate majority leader. The chair probably just has procedural authority relative to the Executive Committee’s proceedings.
Typically a Chairman is the Chair of a Board of Directors. Corporations have Boards of Directors. Partnerships don't. Depends whether the firm is an LLP or Professional Corporation. Seems weird to have both.
