We once had to split up SJ exhibits but I think the limiting factor is more file size than pages
As a law clerk, this gives me hives
I've done hundreds but we split them into multiple submissions after learning that lesson the hard way.
Look up the file size limits for whatever court you are filing in and check for any “unique” requirements (for example, years ago I filed something in a particular court that was limited by what version of Acrobat it was using but this was back when efiling was just starting to be a thing) then go back to the files and know their exact cumulative size and what they can be reduced to if you optimize them. If their cumulative size is greater than the limit or you can’t find anything on the court’s website about attachment size limit have your assistant call the clerk of the court with that information handy. I try to respect their time by being able to tell them exactly what I am getting ready to file, exactly how large the files are and, if I had to reduce the file size and went through advanced optimization settings I will make sure to ask if it is ok that the files will be have to be opened with Adobe “insert program version” or later (this is rare - so don’t get caught up on this part). I literally tell the clerk the situation, what my concern is, whether or not I can reduce the attachments further and ask them how they would prefer I handle it if I think it’s going to have to be split.
Most clerks are incredibly smart and many are friendly. They’ve almost always encountered the situation before and will be able to tell you how they prefer you handle the attachments if they truly exceed the limit.
And here’s a random tip - some exhibit “stickers” in the various pdf programs are freaking huge so if you have a file that is for example 30 pages of all text that is popping out at 30 MB check that there’s not some kind of fancy stamp causing the issue.
Hope this helps someone.
