Sitting on the bench is consulting parlance for not being assigned to a project or client engagement. You should definitely ask to get on a project.
Yes, you should be actively looking for other projects if you are on the bench.
You should definitely speak up and try to get on a project. If you experience a lot of resistance in trying to do so then that might be cause for concern.
Avanade has been doing layoffs in March (2 years now). If you are not on a project for 2-3 months, there is a high possibility you will be laid off.
Bench means you are not assigned to a project/client. The company is paying you to skill up and be available for role discussions during this time. You are expected to search independently to join a project (along with scheduling team and leads to help you). However, it’s been rough and finding projects is not easy at this time of the year. November to February are slow times.
Staffing should not be employee's care.
How the hell do I look for a project to get in? I can click on "apply" on open projects in my scheduling but if you cost too much or they just don't need you how are you supposed to solve the situation?
It is not up to you. The company is trying to give you the fault about something that it should do but don't.
