If you’re on a W-2 and it ends, you can get unemployment as long as you’re available to work, whether it was a contract role or not. You can’t tell anyone you’re on maternity leave and still collect unemployment though. You have to certify that you’re ready, willing and able to work.
Yeah actually I stand corrected again—the staffing agency no longer has disability coverage. It was dropped last year. I ad been looking at an outdated document. 😕
Hi there! First off- congratulations! That’s so exciting. I worked a contract role while I was pregnant that originally had an end date ~month before I was due. My contract did get extended, but it did not turn into a FT role. Honestly, I think it’s unlikely you’ll get mat leave, but you never know. Also technically mat leave = FMLA which is a guarantee of your job, and you only qualify after working somewhere as an FTE for a year; also it’s not paid, although some companies obviously offer paid leave. Some states do have paid family leave that offer benefits, and you would likely qualify for short-term disability for giving work. I cobbled together my own version of mat leave and took a different contract job 4-months after baby was born. It’s a huge cluster to navigate, so feel free to DM me if you’d like to talk about details more.
Thanks! Would love to hear more about how you navigated and will send you a DM. Yes I know FMLA doesn’t cover paid leave in my state. My contract client whom I actually worked for FT previously appears to not have the 1 year requirement based on the benefits doc a former colleague shared with me. They also offer 6 months paid maternity so obviously would be great if I could get hired. But there haven’t been a lot of openings to apply for in my area to date.
