Yeah, I’ve definitely seen this happen. Some companies unfairly equate layoffs with performance issues, even though they’re often just business decisions. It’s frustrating, but not all recruiters think that way. If anything, being upfront about it weeds out companies with that bias. Keep pushing.. you’ll land somewhere better!
I'm so sorry, it really is totally unfair. I would try to not think too much about it though because I really don't think the majority of employers will feel the same way about your layoff. Something really will work out!!
I am never sure. I think it can sometimes be a factor, even if it's just a subconscious bias some people may have. But I agree with others here, most recruiters don't think that way. They may like you more in some cases because they'll worry less about your seriousness and or your current job.
My advice is have your personal narrative sharp and ready to go so that you're prepared and sound confident when you need to address it. Have something concise like "[company] had a major shift in their xyz strategy toward another vertical/geo/product" etc - whatever the specific circumstance - and you see it as an opportunity to find something more challenging or fulfilling etc. They'll see that you can explain the business rationale and you have positive outlook, and they'll move right on. My 2 cents.
PS not generally a good idea to omit it either, because the date you left will show up in a basic background check at the end of the proceess, and you'll look like you hid it
