Moved from California two years ago and we are on the fence. Weather's great, city is a manageable size, lots of outdoor activities, good food, comfortable living options, all that.
The people are another story. Selfish, pushy, rude, arrogant, greedy, and generally as anti-intellectual as you can get. We're really struggling with the one-two punch of selfish and stupid that seems to define life here
LOL SC1, are you me? We've been here exactly 15 months as of next week, and we're saying the same thing - do another year and then evaluate options. My partner keeps saying "if you could set off a neutron bomb that kills all the people, but leaves the city still intact, this place would be perfect"
Yes, I love it here. Been here for 6 years. I moved here from the white as hell Midwest, I love Miami. However, I am Latino and speak fluent Spanish. I knew this was nothing like the rest of America and that’s what I like about Miami. White people tend to fit in and do better in Broward County. Being the cultural Miami sucks (Did it for 19 years in the Midwest and truly hated it)
Director 1 - Your response is giving I’m a white person energy. If you fly back to your own country, people in your home country will call you white if you have US green card or residency regardless of what you look like.
Having come here as a trailing spouse who initially introduced myself the wrong way -
1) I would NOT agree to move here again;
2) If you do move here, “explain that as a reason, not as an excuse”. You’re not “Jamie who just moved here from CA”. You’re “Jamie who just moved here for a great new job/promotion.” Otherwise, you’ll get painted as “Jamie, yet another azzhole who moved here to get away from serious problems - wonder if it’s drugs, jail, or what?” To be fair, a lot of people seem to move here, especially from Blue States, to get away from serious problems. Which they always bring with them.
3) If you have a chronic illness or disability, South Florida is not a good place for you. It’s a very insular community and newcomers are regarded with suspicion. I legitimately really struggled - couple horrific ER trips - the first year or so we moved here because no local doctor was willing to re-prescribe the diabetes medication I’d been on for years. Because of the opioid crisis. I later became disabled due to a selfish Miami driver - I now need ADA accommodations and certain medical equipment because of my injuries. I keep hearing that “ADA is a FEDERAL law, but our State laws say we don’t have to follow it!” (This is not how that works).
4) We’ve also had to move because our neighbors couldn’t deal with having an interracial couple for neighbors.

It really has to do with what area you’re coming from in California and what area you’re going to in “Miami” and what you’re looking for.
You're not gonna get good input on this from fishbowl
It’s definitely different from CA whose big cities LA and SF are bigger, offer more culture and activities such as hiking and are more diverse (when people say Miami is diverse they mean it’s Hispanic). On the plus side, Miamis compact size offers a lot for cheaper. Definitely spend at least a few days in the area you’re planning on living in to see what it’s like both during the week and the weekend, check traffic patterns, see how you’ll get around, where you’ll do your shopping etc. Best of luck!
Just here to say it isn’t Latino only. Plenty of Eastern and western Europeans as well. Compared to California we underperform on anything Asian (south, east, etc.)
Yes it’s amazing
I'm a Miami native and love it. For school and work I've lived in five different states and abroad. As much as I enjoyed all those experiences, I was so happy to come back.
Of course, it's not for everyone.
Moved away for work and miss it tbh
Do we work at the same firm? Happy to DM. I love it here.
I came from Northeast. Have lived in Mia 18 yrs. Cold feet are natural. So Fla is not CA for sure. Mia has +'s and -'s like any city. As for the ppl, it's the least friendliest place I've ever lived in or visited. Most folks don't care about neighborhood or community. Immediate family are #1 and there are no #2's. But there is entrepreneurism & some intellectualism. Natural environment is great, food is great, less stressful lifestyle than other cities.
Just do it. 😊
I lived in Miami for 17 years and just moved away 2 months ago. I had been ready to leave for 8 years. It was great, fun, when I was single with not kids. TERRIBLE for family, absolutely terrible for dating (all of south Florida). If you are coming here I hope you already have an extremely solid career, and solid family foundation. It will be hard to find both here. It will be very hard to make friends in Miami. It is the scammer capital of the country and also the capital of facade. It will make you extremely street smart if you weren't, and you will need to have 24/7 surveillance on your home no matter where you live. Research research research the areas where you think you'll be able to afford to live. Good luck. If you come, have an exit strategy.
Moved from north east a year ago. I like Miami, but ai dont love it. Has definitely lots of pros as well as cons as every city. Really depends what are you looking for here. We have two kids and being with very young kids here is great. If I was single or even a couple I wouldnt be here full time. As winter escape from cold maybe but not permanent.
