Little column a, little column b. It's annoying as a moviegoer who has no interest in superheroes or Star Wars. But until these reboots and franchises stop killing it at the box office, I'm guessing they'll continue to dominate the landscape.
Ironically, what I sometimes think of as the original was just a reboot. Mostly 90’s movies when I was younger and having no clue at the time. Freaky Friday and Parent Trap come to mind.
It's not just Hollywood. Algorithms have destroyed creativity. We know far too much about how to maximize viewership, and we have done so at the expense of art.
Definitely a little bit of both, money talks and unfortunately, reboots and franchises tend to make more money, execs are also too scared to try anything new just in case it flops.
They just want to stretch out franchises for as long as they can, especially Disney- they will just keep doing this till god knows how long!
