I made the switch as an associate and felt like my background in plaintiffs work gave me a huge advantage on the defense side. The biggest struggle was learning to bill and client communications. On the plaintiffs side you have a lot more leeway as far as decisions while on the defense clients are more involved in the process (ex mediator selection, etc). But overall I find defense work a lot more fun and less stressful. Congrats!
This is super interesting insight P1! I've been considered a similar shift - interesting to see tht there is more leeway and that it's less stressful. Making me think I should be more serious about making the switch!
Do it!
I've been contemplating this for a while now. I have a friend who made the jump. And it was successful.
I've now had two defense side jobs post plaintiff side. For both defense side jobs, the attorneys frequently went up against my plaintiff side firm so they respected my experience.
