Additional Posts in Salary Negotiations
Im not searching for a new job but an acquaintance reached out about a similar role at a similar energy company.Turns out 2 ppl threw my name in the hat. I looked into it and the position was posted 2 weeks ago.Their director wants to meet.I bet pay is one of the first things to be discussed so that no one’s time is wasted.Am I crazy for not wanting to entertain it for less than 20-25% base pay increase? Is it selfish to ask for more? I’m sure most salary conversations end in negotiation anyways?

I think this may depend on the company. I was in a position where the workload grew to be too much and I applied for another position. It turned out to be a lateral position and I was told at the beginning that my salary would not change and it didn't. The job I transitioned from? I trained two new people to do it and they couldn't keep up so eventually the work was divided up between five people.
As mentioned, it depends on the company and the role, but at one point, I was considering a position which, although supporting a higher level executive and an increasing workload, it was considered a lateral move and I was told that the salary increase would only be between three and 5%. Our reviews and merit increases were coming up within the next couple of months which chances are it would be around 3 1/2% I passed on the “promotion“ as there was really nothing in it for me besides having a boss with a better title. Lol.
A lateral move doesn’t mean you can’t negotiate. Most people assume internal moves come with a fixed salary, but that’s not always true. If your skills, responsibilities, or impact are increasing—even slightly—that’s leverage. Do your research, highlight how this move benefits the company, and ask. Worst-case scenario? They say no. Best case? You get paid what you’re worth. If it’s helpful to talk through your specific situation, feel free to DM.
