I’d bail on your current company. They didn’t value your concerns about the $ until you told them you were leaving.
Interviewed twice with VP and hiring director, got an offer for 51% increase of what I currently make.
Told company A my last day would be in three weeks. Company A has come back with a counter offer to increase my salary but will still be 6k less than company B ( plus company b is remote so I wouldn’t have to drive 68 miles a day $$$$) and plan to put me in a manager role in the next 6 months which will be 12% increase on company B offer but obviously a lot more responsibility at company A.
There are many factors here that need to be considered. My husband and I want to start a family in the very near future so working remotely is sounding very attractive to me. My fear with company B is, what if they decide they need the position to be onsite, I am not willing to move so essentially I will be out of a job. Plus a recession is on the horizon so I could be the first to be cut.
Company B sounds so attractive for the short term and company A sounds more promising long term.
Advice?
Time to bail. If you’re not being paid market value and have the research, etc to back it up and it falls on deaf ears, it’s time to take a risk and make a move. I could see if you already had children of being worried about LIFO but since you don’t, take the chance. If the job is remote, I doubt if they will call you in - they would have to cover moving expense, etc. and companies don’t like doing that. Can’t worry about all the what-ifs. You’ll never leave the house if you do that!
So they are actually revising the whole compensation plan for everyone due to this. I guess I was the catalyst for change?
Counter offers are never a good idea. And if the new position is agreed upon as remote, they won’t likely make you start coming onsite later. I wouldn’t worry about it. New company sounds like a great opportunity for both short and long term!
Was the remote work offer conditional? Did they say they're working remotely for now? (Which means it'll change in the future). Is the remote work included in your offer letter? If yes, then I don't see what you should be worried about.
If I were you, I'd take the new offer but that's just me. You could also get laid off in your current company in case of a recession. Covid had a good number of older seasoned employees laid off at my job while some newbies were retained. No 9-5 job is fully secured despite your tenure and loyalty. So if you get an opportunity, grab it.
What I don't understand is why would they consider bumping you to a manager role after 6 months, why not do it now to retain you? (Only makes sense if their current offer has reached the highest range for your current position and you need additional 6 months to meet policy requirement for a promotion) How long have you been in this role for your current company?
I'd still leave mostly because they never listened to you until a competitor came into the picture. They don't value what they have.
I agree with @PM1
