Does anyone else struggle with accommodations and modifications for your CTE classes? I teach complex business classes such as accounting and management and I have a few moderate SPED students who can’t handle basic information and skills. They need almost constant reminders to stay on task, monopolize class time, and keeping up with IEPs, documentation, and contact requirements doesn’t allow me any time for prep work, planning, or grading. How do you keep up?

I certainly have found an issue with this. I spent a lot of time talking to special education teachers to learn about strategies that I could use. I’ve also advocated in the past for a Teaching Assistant / Paraprofessional if the ratio is high enough.

Yes, many of us do. It is a tough battle because the IEP is a federal mandate- tied to funding and potential liabilities/lawsuits.

My current approach (as able), Apply UDL for instruction and materials, prioritize completion of IEP paperwork upon receipt.

Their special Ed case carrier should give you strategies or tools to support those students. You don’t have to do it alone. You can also tell them to send an aide to help support all of the students (you don’t want them singled out).

Do those students really need your class? What will those students realistically be able to do after high school? If those students have little to no chance of actually benefitting from your class, then see about having them moved to a different class. You will need to document that their accommodations aren't working and/or that it is interfering with your ability to teach. You have the right to call an ARD meeting about appropriate placement. Just have all your documentation to justify it. Good luck.

I teach graphic design and printing. For me, having a good rapport with the student's caseworker and/or social work is key! I tend to get more personalized information that allows me to alter what I'm teaching based on the student's ability.

I too teach accounting (and marketing). To modify Acctg is difficult as you can’t really create a “lite” version of GAAP. But you can modify the vocabulary, work a lot with T accounts, use manipulatives as an analogy for JEs. All of my tests are open book (and open computer meaning they can Google anything). I have sample Financial Stmts hanging on the bulletin boards. And still many students will fail! 🤦🏽‍♀️. Marketing is strictly project based - sooo much easier to modify.

Any advice for interviewing? I’m having trouble giving succinct answers to impromptu questions that I didn’t prepare answers to ahead of time. I have a second interview (on video) for an in-house position tomorrow and am seriously worried about rambling or not fully answering questions once my nerves fully kick in. Any other interview advice for ADHDers is much appreciated too!

Any suggestions on what to get at RH? We already got our major furniture expenses out of the way... it’s the $350 rh credit or take 250 cash. I’m thinking of the latter but wondering if there any items I would probably not get otherwise from the free money (there were some issues with our furniture so this was comp)

For reasons that take too long to explain, I anticipate being in line for a massive tax refund next year. As such, how strongly should I consider converting traditional IRA funds to Roth?

I don't need the liquidity/cash that the refund would provide and I think it might be worth reducing what's in my traditional IRA so I can minimize any pro-rata issue when doing backdoor/mega backdoor conversions in the future. Appreciate any sense check of my thinking/logic. Thanks!!

Looking to practice with someone in DC/northern Virginia in the next several weeks

Choice between a really nice property, under budget, with a pool (main reason for wanting this place), minor updates needed + landscaping eventually (well manicured lawn), in great school district (no kids so don't care but it makes it well positioned for resale - only lasted a week last time it was on the market 4 yrs ago), vs. new construction townhouse, in similar area, max budget + higher taxes ... On paper it sounds like a no-brainer but I'm torn... Some help here plz 🙏

Without giving away too much detail, I’ve been managing a project for months that’s visible to the company. I’ve loved doing it. Have learned a lot, given license to plan a lot of it without much oversight and have been told what a great job I’ve done.
Then awhile back new management comes in who wants to put their stamp on it, change it up. Fine, I expected that. (Note, these folks are NOT my managers; my manager is more senior but these folks do not report to my manager).

Tested positive for COVID yesterday.

10 full days would mean isolation until 12/31.

Am I being selfish for wanting to ask the host if I can still go to the party if I test negative that day?
