I certainly have found an issue with this. I spent a lot of time talking to special education teachers to learn about strategies that I could use. I’ve also advocated in the past for a Teaching Assistant / Paraprofessional if the ratio is high enough.
Yes, many of us do. It is a tough battle because the IEP is a federal mandate- tied to funding and potential liabilities/lawsuits.
My current approach (as able), Apply UDL for instruction and materials, prioritize completion of IEP paperwork upon receipt.
Their special Ed case carrier should give you strategies or tools to support those students. You don’t have to do it alone. You can also tell them to send an aide to help support all of the students (you don’t want them singled out).
Do those students really need your class? What will those students realistically be able to do after high school? If those students have little to no chance of actually benefitting from your class, then see about having them moved to a different class. You will need to document that their accommodations aren't working and/or that it is interfering with your ability to teach. You have the right to call an ARD meeting about appropriate placement. Just have all your documentation to justify it. Good luck.
I teach graphic design and printing. For me, having a good rapport with the student's caseworker and/or social work is key! I tend to get more personalized information that allows me to alter what I'm teaching based on the student's ability.
I too teach accounting (and marketing). To modify Acctg is difficult as you can’t really create a “lite” version of GAAP. But you can modify the vocabulary, work a lot with T accounts, use manipulatives as an analogy for JEs. All of my tests are open book (and open computer meaning they can Google anything). I have sample Financial Stmts hanging on the bulletin boards. And still many students will fail! 🤦🏽♀️. Marketing is strictly project based - sooo much easier to modify.
