Tactics used at places I've worked:
-a nonprofit offering artist apprenticeships to HS students had hiring quotas for all the neighborhoods in the city.
-DEI officer (in addition to her other role)
-Racial awareness workshops (bi-weekly I think)
-Recruiters specializing in DEI
-Reimbursement for $1k worth of DEI education (books, classes etc)
-Cultural awareness section of the interview process

If DEI isn't embedded in every level of an organization it will fall short. While DEI might live with HR that shouldn't be the only place is exist. It's hard work that some avoid at all cost. Change management and culture shifts are difficult in nature and take time. DEI intiative may take years an many attempts but the work is necessary. A sense of belonging will increase retention and that's what many c-level employees look forward to.

Great question! The school I currently work in is fully dedicated to DEI. From faculty to students our leaders are always finding ways to foster inclusion and belonging.

Specifically, increasing access to college level courses for all students. Providing jobs to students. Having a culture club. Translated materials and messages for family members. Most importantly, having a diversed faculty!
