Posting my comment on main thread so if others see this they can be aware of scammy practices too.
The scam isn’t Teams, it’s:
1) being told to direct message someone for the interview, rather than the recruiter setting up a meeting directly,
2) being told you’ll be given a check (lol, no) directly to purchase equipment, rather than submitting a reimbursement request (which would only be allowable once you’ve secured employment), and
3) being told your repayment should be provided directly to another employee (never should happen - all funds should ‘cross the company’)
The scam goal is to commit check fraud and falsely misrepresent a company to do it - if you want to help l potential victims out, you should get more information on them (like street addresses, names, etc under the guise of seeking employment) and report to your state attorney general and the FTC (and maybe Expedia, who could have a vested interest in being falsely represented). Even if it’s an out of country operation, I think it’s worth reporting. Tons of people fall prey to these every year.

We switched from Teams to Zoom last year, but it’s entirely possible the recruiter clicked the wrong link. I’m confused by your post though - what is sus? The offer or Microsoft Teams link?
100% a scam, no one will ever give you a check to purchase equipment and no company would ever have you give monies to another employee directly. Sorry to hear!
