I'm not super happy in tech-specific recruiting and find it a lot more laborious than other verticals. We really struggle to find qualified candidates who are also willing to accept starting salaries and more equity. Sometimes I want to move away from this. Has anyone else felt this way?

👉Just ask for it. Really, you would be surprised. Might be easier to switch to a new company and ask. I did that 3 years into my career.

And 🛑 wasting your time at a company that under-values you severely. Sometimes switching companies every 2 years or so will allow you to keep raising the bar for yourself.

Job is perfect match for her skillset. They asked for her expectations, she said 90. They told her range for the job was 90-110. Offer was made at 90 (50M valuation start up). Also got stock option (24k for 4y vesting, valuated at 50k today) Convinced her to negotiate for 110. Is that too late? What arguments to use?

My background is in tech transactional. I joined a cybersecurity SaaS startup at the end of last year and now also handle more generalist matters in addition to all things commercial-related. I have a number of books on contracts that I’ve found super helpful over the years (The Tech Contracts Handbook, A Manual of Style for Contract Drafting, Sign Here, etc.). What’s a fair expectation for my first raise? Publicly traded co with ~2500 employees. I’ve been doing litigation with the company for almost 3 yrs and have only had a 2% cost of living raise so far. Graduated in 2014. Base comp is $127.5k in the Philly area. I see salaries all over the place in this site and it’s hard to tell whether mine is competitive.

For in-house counsel roles, does firm prestige matter? For example, would the fact that an applicant is from Sullivan & Cromwell vs, say, White & Case matter at all, or is it much more about experience/interview? Does it matter as much as law school credentials? Assuming a mid-level corporate associate seeking to go in-house.

Any advice on finding in-house opportunities for junior associates in IP transactions/privacy? I've seen some juniors with 0.5-1.5 years of experience in biglaw go in-house lately, but all the postings I've found ask for 3+ years.

I’m in discussions to become the GC of a mid size but international company that does ~$1 billion in annual revenue. Smallish legal department. They’ve asked for my comp expectations. I don’t have specific expectations but I want to be compensated at least market for a NYC based GC (which looks like cash comp of at least $300k plus bonus, etc). Any suggestions on how people would respond?

Currently working on a three person team in a larger GC group. I lateraled from a different group that did not pay attorneys on an attorney scale. I’m stuck in my old pay scale but have gotten promotions and raises quickly with more on the horizon. A recruiter reached out with a new role for 2-2.5x more than I currently make doing something similar. I love my company and the people I work with but the money isn’t there. Is it worth trying to get a counter to stay if I get the bigger offer?

Is it difficult landing an in-house position as only a second year corporate associate in big law? I know some people who went in-house straight out of law school and some who had no transactional background but went in-house after just a year of practice. Not having that same luck on my end.

Trying to understand risk of loss and title better. When does it make sense for title to transfer upon receipt of payment? Why would title and risk transfer separately?

Considering taking a position with a small-cap in the US trying to build their legal department. The title is standard “counsel” although the work would be with the senior leadership team and reporting to the GC in Europe. How reasonable is it to ask for a bump in title - Senior counsel or Head of Legal, US? If it matters, I am a 6th year and have been told that I will be expected to hire a junior or paralegal as we build up.

Big law specialist with an offer to be the CFO and GC of a 250M AUM hedge fund. All in comp would probably be ~$300k, so about $100k less than where I would be in big law (including bonus). Potential to get involved in the business side, but most likely more of a back office role (I would also be the only legal hire - main goal would be cutting outside legal cost and streamlining processes). What are some secondary skills or speciality that could make me more than just an IP Attorney? Do any of you have other parts of your title? Just looking to grow and my head isn't super interested in that, but the CLO is, but doesn't know where he sees a gap for me right now.
