I know as an assistant I would rather be in the room with the editor Getting put in a small box with a bunch of other assists disconnects us so much from the creative team and process.
I prefer assists to be in the room - it’s how I learned and everything that allows them to grow helps them help me. Unfortunately even having an assist on projects is becoming more and more rare
100% agree with all points here.
Having the assist in the room is a benefit as they see what the editor is doing, are right there for anything the editor needs, and can also help with clients immediately
I typically don’t work in the same room as the editor, but when I do I feel like I gain XP at an exponential rate. If you plan to get promoted and stay with the same company, maybe you can sell it to your boss as an investment in your future abilities. Do they want an editor who has all the traits you outlined above, or someone who spent their time doing busy work?
@AE2– Same here! I requested more session time in a review, but it did not stick. I’ve hit a ceiling and my growth has plateaued out, especially given I’ve been at this long enough to have a solid reel. No interest in acquiring any new editors anytime soon, so for now, hands for the busy work... Hoping more shops out there put more of an emphasis on mentorship and session time.
@OP - I’m starting to feel the same things. What city are you in?
@AE1, agreed – It is definitely my preference as well. It gives you opportunities to learn from the editor, build relationships with clients, and keep track of project details more closely. Do most houses have in-session AE’s or is the assist room becoming more of the norm?
I’m removed from the editing process and spend most of my time assisting other departments and/or producing unofficially. The rate of growth toward editor seems much slower this way, since a large portion of tasks do not come from/relate to Offline... and when I ask to sit in session, the answer is “no, you’re too valuable.” Any advice?
