What would be a reason for an associate to get fired or laid off within first year?

Firm (boutique ) just announced a firm-wide reduction to 3 days a week (it was either that or massive layoffs). I’m very scared about the future, I love consulting very much and can’t imagine exiting, any suggestions on:

1. What to do with the extra time
2. How to find a consulting gig in the current times
3. Anyone willing to chat for career advice
