My favorite ant killer is a sugar water solution with just a tiny bit of borax (you can google the recipe). You soak cotton balls in it. At first it REALLY attracts a bunch of ants but then the ants take the food back to their nest where it kills them all. The tiny bit of borax in the solution should be plant safe (or even good for the soil) and is pet safe too.
I will purchase some Borax for next summer I ended up buying sent bait and then they switched.
Dawn dish soap kills ants and other on contact. Surround your plant with dawn dish soap and if the ants can not get around the soap barrier you shouldn’t have issues with those ants any longer. You can also get the dawn spray and ants directly but I don’t know if the soap would hurt your plants.
I have tried this but it's so messy because after the dds dries they go over it like nothing

Do you know what kind of ants they are, or what they're eating?
If you get rid of the food sources (pet food bowls, aphid honeydew, etc.) that is a good start, but if they like the shelter the pot provides your only option is to prevent them from getting into the pot. Sticky stuff (e.g. "tanglefoot") around the pot can keep them out but is not exactly visually appealing.
Most other options involve some form of bait/poison. Unless they are an invasive species (e.g. Argentine ants) I wouldn't go that route personally.
