Fish, bit of an odd question. Is there a demographic component to who mostly visits national and state parks? I have noticed that African Americans are not seen as much at national parks even those closer to cities where they are the majority like Smoky Mountains. Majority of the tourists are white, many Asians both South and East Asian. Is this a known trend?

This is not a question for a thread of an extremely diverse city in a state without national parks. Google is your friend.

I absolutely love being outside and love a park or a garden, but I’ve never been to a a national Park other than the Grand Canyon one time. I’ve never really considered it. And I’m white.

African American here. There is definitely a demographic component, and it’s not just about whether we like nature or not. It’s about access, history, and safety.
A lot of us can’t afford to use our time off doing something that feels like more work. We’re already carrying so much mentally, emotionally, and physically in a country that was built on our backs. And even now, we’re still fighting just to buy homes, build generational wealth, get promoted, or simply be seen as non-threatening.
For some people, hiking sounds like peace. For many of us, it requires gear, money, time, education, and exposure we didn’t grow up with. And even if we were exposed, we have to think about whether someone might question why we’re there, or worse, call the cops because they feel uncomfortable.
So yeah, there’s a reason you don’t see us out there as much. It’s not just preference. It’s deeper than that and every black person would give you a different version of the answer that touches a little bit here or there, on this.

I hope you’re able to escape this perspective and mentality someday. I suggest getting outside and enjoying some of God’s natural beauty.

Yes, the majority demo is white, male, age 45+.
Sure, it’s a known trend that Black people don’t tend to vacation in rural/remote destinations in the US.

Interesting. Never struck me until now. But been reading up about it. Personally as a foreign born visa holder, I always find solace in places where there is diversity.

But then our friends and family have visited NPs a lot so that has rubbed off on us last couple of years and that is when I noticed this demographic trend.

I’m 32. I have $80k saved. $40k currently invested. Then ~$50-60k in 401k. My plan was to save for a house, but prices have skyrocketed. As life returns to normal...I need to now move out from my parents’ again. Do I bite the bullet and rent in NYC, or stay and save another 12-18 months and hope to buy something? Full transparency: taxes make it very difficult to buy. It’s not the down payment, it’s the taxes.
