Good question. They’re probably fearful that it will be treated as an interim gig and the proven vet will jump ship at the first GCD/ECD opportunity that comes along.
It’s an age old question. No pun intended 😉. Let’s face it, in your case, ‘the agency’ or ‘they’ is the CCO. unconscious bias has stigmatized the recruiting process.
From what I've seen, it's pretty conscious most of the time.
Besides just plain garden variety ageism, assuming the creative need is there and they like the person after vetting/interviewing etc, what could the agency possibly see as a downside to such a scenario? It's the old "getting a Ferrari/Porsche/Mercedes for Kia prices" thing...
But what if this person (okay, it's me, shocker right??) makes it clear they've already done the "moving around/moving up around the industry" thing for three decades, and now only wants to settle in, work hard as usual, make great work with great people, help the agency grow and attract/retain great talent etc for the next 5 years or so—at an incredible value/discount/ROI for the agency—without the slightest care of leveraging it into another gig. I mean, 5 years at one place is a lifetime in this industry...
Maybe they would be more receptive if you described you role as an artisan, with high quality and productivity, and mentoring if needed, but leaving management roles and money for those who want that. So we need a new title ... one that coworkers would not envy.
I’m in a similar boat on the strategy side. I don’t need/want to be the top person at an agency, even though I’ve been there and had success.
Agree with a lot of what’s been said… mixture of ageism, fear you’ll either jump or try and take someone else’s job, perception you’re a hack (even if proven), etc.
Beyond that, there is also a push for DEI that creates additional headwinds. If you’re an experienced (older) white guy, you’re less likely to be considered right now than before. A recruiter literally told me her brief for a position doesn’t match because I don’t fit any of the DEI considerations. It’s frustrating.
IMO, we have 3 options…
1. Keep applying and hope for different results
2. Create our own path in the industry
3. Explore a new path (outside of the industry)
