I’m a CPS graduate. I moved to the North Shore suburbs and just drive the whole family to the city every weekend to do activities if my kids aren’t doing any sports/extra curriculars. Even with 3 days RTO (via Metra), it’s not crazy to commute to West Loop. A lot of us walk/bus from Ogilvie. We have a reduced parking rate for $12/12 hours so sometimes I drive if I’m expecting to deviate from the 8-6 window of easy trains. Late night work dinners end up with me grabbing a $30 uber back to my home.
To date myself a little (and being careful to not possibly dox myself), I went to Whitney Young back when it was the best HS in the city and before this new ultra-complicated SE process. I was also of the lowest socio-economic tier and I lived in a “blighted” zip code. I was also one of the highest scoring test takers in the city for my year. Even with all that, I came in the middle of the list because I am not black/african American or Latino (of Hispanic descent), which are the two heavily favored categories of race-based admissions. This was the exact terminology in the application for early selective enrollment. In the middle of my time at CPS, they changed from race based to zip code based admission criteria.
Having said all that, Mayor BJ plans on dismantling the SE process and go back to a neighborhood based school system. CTU favors that as well. I think he will succeed in this.
Do you want to live in the city or a suburb? That’s the real question.
I grew up on the North Shore and my dad and stepfamily lived in Lincoln Park so I’ve spent a lot of time in both places and have friends who’ve chosen to live in both.
Public schools in Wilmette are much better. And it’s safer. Living in Lincoln Park will be more expensive, and you’ll likely have a smaller place, especially if you’re doing private schools.
Commute from Wilmette to West Loop isn’t bad especially if taking the train. But Lincoln Park is almost certainly better.
For me Wilmette would be the clear winner once you have kids that are 5 and up.
Thank you BCG1. These days, the safety question has become more top of mind for me. The random shooting of a tourist in Streeterville made me question, “What stops these violent actions from moving to other parts in the city (e.g. Lincoln Park). I think this is pushing me more toward considering Wilmette

Lincoln Park and Wilmette are very different vibes

To me, the answer would be a quick LP but I am avoidant of suburbs. I love the city, I love the parks, and I’m proud of my 606 zip code.
However, I’m in a similar boat about schools - this is a stress inducing unknown to me right since my kids are years away from school age but my spouse is adamantly against CPS.
Currently, we are in the camp of “live where makes you happy and prepare to pay for private school.” It’s not LP yet but it’s safe and family and budget friendly.
I’m not, my spouse is. It’s a whole thing..
