For those who early retired after working for 15-20 years from a highly demanding, high stress career (consulting), how long did it take you to actually decompress? 3 months, 6 months? what did you do to accelerate that?

Took me a few months to start feeling a difference and then a year to completely decompress. At first, I kept waking up at 5am, checking emails that didn’t exist. Three months in, I finally stopped hearing imaginary Slack pings. Long walks with no phone, picking up old hobbies, and unlearning the idea that rest equals laziness. Decompression isn’t a vacation, it’s a detox.

Congrats OP.

Please come back in a year and debrief the experience... Currently on year 11 (though my Whoop age suggests it's year 15). Your story gives hope.

You don’t feel decompressed yet after 5 months?

12 months minimum.

After a 20 year career, it took my husband about 3 days to settle into his new life haha! I went part-time at the same time (for benefits and a little income) and that was a harder transition. I feel behind all of the time and have to constantly set boundaries with my time.

He was just so burnt out. He decided to give himself as many days as he needed to be bored. In the meantime, he made a list of house projects he’s been putting off. Once he was a little bored, he started working on the projects. He says it’s very satisfying to know he’s doing these things for us, rather than an employer.

Immediately had a sense of relief but was not able to fully just “be” until month 5-6 and really felt free close to a year.

I actively worked with a therapist to work on the ptsd from work (like m1 said about the pings triggering a sense of stress and panic). Learned to wake up without an alarm. Became super active and fit. Became truly happy. But at some point you will want to find something to provide a sense of purpose or intellectual challenge

What do you estimate to be your personal functional inflation experienced over the last year?

I know the fed says 8.6%, but that number is averaged over many products normal people don’t frequently interact with.

I’d rough estimate something closer to 25% cost of living inflation over the last year for myself.

Can people working side gigs as consultants receive deferred compensation? Or has anyone seen other creative, legal ways that consultants can work now and get paid later? I have a side gig that could end at any time, and I don’t envision it going into 2022. Advice and tips for a first time rental property investor?

I am 24 saving up for my first property to purchase at the end of 2021 / early 2022 in the Long Island, NY area.

I’d like to save up around $50K in my HYSA for a property <$400K in LI. Does this sound reasonable?

Does anyone have any advice on investing in the LI area (best location, SFH v MFH) or just general first time rental property buying advice?

Thanks all

Do you have a set $ you save every month? I'm 27, I've been tracking spend since 2020 and my $ saved has very strong variances MoM. If we consider 2021 a more "regular" year, I varied from $600 saved one month up to $3.2k in another (though that was partially due to a job change)... It's not affecting my overall saving % (was 46%) but wondering if I should try to even it out a bit more?

Obviously way more than I'd make if I stayed at KPMG for busy season.
