I was a hostess at a local restaurant during bar prep and for months after while looking for a full-time job. By January (8 months post-grad) I used a recruiter and accepted a temp job as a Contracts Administrator. I was worried about accepting a non-JD-required job but it paid more than hostessing and it was a step in the right direction. I temped for a month before they hired me full-time, and 4 years later I was promoted and started up their Legal Dept. I’m head of legal now and been there 9.5 years. Hate to say that it just worked out because it sounds unhelpful, but it did!
A great job is coming for you but don’t force the process. This happened to me but it took a bit of time. One thing I did NOT do was sit still, doing nothing until my dream job came along. My story may be a bit unique in that my dream job wasn’t about trying to get into a huge law firm, receiving a decent six figure salary. No, I was not born into wealth. I still have debt, but I just wanted to help hurting people.
During law school, I had various internships, meeting many individuals who I am still in contact with to this day. I’ve had several attorney jobs (civil and criminal practice) providing me with so much legal experience, which has allowed me to help people in multiple areas of law. And in the times we are living in, I think it’s important to consider diversifying your practice.
While you are waiting, consider internships or part-time attorney positions helping clients navigate the legal system. There are people who could use your assistance right now.
If your desire is to be in litigation, you need to stay active in the courts, even if it’s just to sit and observe cases periodically. Your mind needs to stay fresh with the law or you will start forgetting it. Go and help someone, and while you’re helping them, it’s possible that the job you’ve been waiting on will come shortly thereafter. Don’t stop believing.
I had a good friend graduate from a top school without a job. He was in the small minority that fell through the cracks due to some unfortunate circumstances. He ended up taking a short term position in an area of interest to him that was not law related. Eventually got into a small law firm, took on a high profile public service role, used that to get into big law and ultimately became head of his practice group at a major international law firm. You can overcome your current position.
Great encouraging word!
Car accident firm -> tax firm -> big law -> small firm paying me $225 per hour with the ability to work as little or as much as I want
I was there, then I have a bad job that I want to quit everyday. But for the money, I can only continue working for them.
Have you tried applied for clerkships? That would give you some valuable experience and help you go where you wish. Take a look at OSCAR for available clerkships.
I was bottom of the class. No job lined up. After I took the bar I reached out to my career center and discussed my goals. They gave me a list of alumni emails and their respective practice areas. I cold-emailed probably 50 firms and finally got a response from one and landed a job (they weren’t even hiring). Fast forward 7 years and I’m working my dream job in corporate M&A amongst people who were certainly at the top of the class. It can work out you just need to put yourself out there! Good luck!
I was hired by a small firm in my desired practice area around the same time results were released in October. The pay was pretty lousy but I got a lot of experience very early on doing things I never would’ve had a chance to do at a larger firm.
Fast forward to 2ish years later, I lateraled to a larger firm that I’d been eyeing since I was in law school. Since then I’ve watched most of my classmates leave their “dream job” and move on to the next opportunity, and the next, and the next. Don’t sweat the timing and do what you can to get the experience that will set you up for success wherever you’d like to see yourself land. And who knows, maybe by the time you get there you’ll have an entirely different dream job anyway.
Going into bar study, I had a girlfriend and a line on a job that was my dream job. Then she ghosted me after like 9 months because she cheated on me, and my dream job turned out to be run by a giant turd who turned it into a toxic hellhole. I quit that job because the panic attacks got to be a bit much, then spent 90 days unemployed before finding a contract gig. Then I got hired at a firm that was marginally better, one that was markedly worse, another that was great, an in-house job that turned sour, and now another firm.
Point is, everyone has a different trajectory. You never really know where you're going to end up.
