Enjoy some Belikin Beer
Absolutely dive the great blue hole
It’s a truly unique thing
We did some stuff inland with folks who did the flyover. It sounded pretty sweet, but our budget was already blown on the diving lol
You going inland at all? San Ignacio is great for a couple of days.
There's...
- a few pyramids (Xunantunich and Cahal Pech)
- a decent zoo with plenty of toucans and unique animals
- the ATM cave is extremely cool
- a really dope jungle pontoon cruise with a sticky waterfall
We made a few days out of it before going diving. Idk jack about the coast and resorts.
I second Xunantunich, Caracol and ATM. Depending on how much time you have, there is an overnight tour to Tikal in Guatemala that is great. Guide picks you up in San Ignacio, drives you to Tikal where you spend the night, you do a sunrise hike around the ruins and then they take you back to San Ignacio in the afternoon
Second the zoo rec - we took our 3 year old and she still talks about the animals 2 years later
I thought Tikal in Guatemala was worth the trip over from San Ignacio
Also, snorkeling in Hol chan reserve
Do you already have hotels/resorts booked? FWIW we loved our stays at Chaa Creek in San Ignacio and Victoria House on Ambergris Caye
We stayed at the "San Ignacio Resort"...you can skip that.
I think we got a good price, but I would never recommend it. Nothing particularly negative, but impressively mid in every way.
Toucans flying around at breakfast was cool, but I think that's most places. There is an iguana conservation shelter behind it which was cool. It's also on a hill that you will not want to walk up.
For perspective, I’ve been traveling to Belize since 2001, married a Belizean, and have 2 kids who are dual citizens (US and Belize).
Stay away from Belize City, other than tourist area of the port. Also avoid Guatemalan border. Other than that, the people are super friendly/helpful and welcoming.
Food is amazing! If inland, ask what the protein is ( we ordered chicken and got iguana 🤮). Produce is super fresh, ripe, and tastes like it should (not US refrigerated).
Enjoy your trip and leave it better than when you arrive.
Thank you!
Be careful.
Yeah we dont plan on staying in belize city at all!
