I’d try to venture beyond the tourist traps around midtown. My top two reccs would be the highline and Central Park. Thej I’d go to a museum. Prob natural history considering the kid’s age.

Forgot about highline and seconding it- such a unique spot and close to Chelsea Market too,

We're planning a trip this fall! If you're looking for a hotel, the Millenium Hilton on One World Plaza has a pool, which is what makes a good hotel according to my kids haha. The Color Museum/Museum of Ice Cream is super kid friendly and fun.
Carmine's is my favorite spot for dinner- family sized portions, super friendly, great italian food.
Central Park Carousel and Heckscher Playground, Adventure Playground or Ancient Playground for that age group. Really, you probably could spend the whole day doing a tour of Central Park Playgrounds haha.
I’d say High Line, too. Or Bryant Park and dip into the Public Library too if staying strictly in the Times Square area. Tony DiNapoli for another family-style rec in the area. Don’t pay the “characters” in Times Square, even if they go to you for a photo. Don’t pay for a horse carriage ride if you make it to Central Park. Pedicabs are fine but a racket.
Sorry, skipped over the CP part. On the East side of the park you can walk through part of the zoo for free and also see the model pond nearby. It also may be a fun quest to search for the statues in the park!
Ride the subway in front. Go to empire state building. Go down to Chelsea market or Chelsea pier for fun. Hudson yards also has a great concert series. Here: https://www.hudsonyardsnewyork.com/summer-concerts-wells-fargo-stage
TKTS cheap broadway show? Intrepid Museum? Circle line cruise around the island?
Hayden Planetarium
Outside your target area, but take the Staten Island Ferry for FREE to catch a glimpse of the statue of liberty.
Parts of the Met might be cool to a kiddo—like the Egyptian stuff specifically. Same with Museum of Natural History with the giant whale on the ceiling, etc.
Also, it’s ok to go to touristy areas! You’re being a tourist!

Don’t spend too much time at Times Square. A quick look will be cool for a kid. Central Park is fun. You could rent bikes. A kid might like seeing the hotel from home alone on the south side of the park. Is strongly recommend expanding your zone to hit some other cool spots.
Copying Deloitte 1's idea, but in more detail, you take the #1 train south to the very end. Get out of the subway and get on the Staten Island Ferry (it's free). In Staten Island, get off the boat and take the next boat back to Manhattan. The view is incredible. In midtown, go to Grand Central Terminal at 5pm and watch all the commuters hurry to catch their trains to go home. Don't forget to look at the ceiling.
