Googlers: what’s the deal with the NY office? Recruiter shared in passing the company is trending away from hiring legal teams there, and I didn’t want to ask more and risk sounding disinterested in the role I’m interviewing for. Has the company said anything about it explicitly? Is there a lot of internal competition for NY roles when they do open up?

There’s been a mandate from Kent to move to a more distributed legal team, rather than centralized in Bay Area and NY. Among other things, it is significantly less expensive to hire in lower cost markets (compensation is scaled accordingly; office space is cheaper; etc.). Most new legal jobs are only open for smaller markets; exceptions can be made, but are rare (eg, if no good candidates are found). Generally the location requirement applies to internal candidates too, though the rules are a bit more flexible.

Sure

in house legal is a cost center so most companies would rather place their lawyers in cheaper COL rather than higher

Additional Posts in In-House Counsel

Would you strongly advise against going in-house right after a state court clerkship? (No law firm experience in law school either). I don’t know if I want to become an in-house forever. Would it be difficult to get a law firm job at a later time?

Very specific to retail and/or hospitality in-house roles: has anyone found a good solution for predictive scheduling? Our retail division has one set of software for scheduling and one for payroll, and neither of them can handle predictive scheduling compliance issues unless they’re used for both the scheduling and payroll functions. I’m coming up empty on ideas for them to bridge the gap, but I’m also new to my compliance counsel role, so I would be overjoyed if anyone has suggestions.

How far do you require depts be with negotiating commercial contract terms before your legal review? I’m talking routine low value and risk contracts (e.g., vendor services), where Legal terms won’t kill the deal. My clients blindly forward contracts. I say “are you sure this term is ok?” And often get “no.” They’re surprised because they never read them. Checking the temp to see what others experience, what might be normal. I feel contract training in my clients’ future...

Have interviews set up at FAANG co and getting good signals, for a position that was posted widely (all across US) but not remote. Haven’t broached the subject of location yet. Would you (1) early on clearly state that you’re not open to relocation but that you would be open to visiting a big office once or twice a month; (2) not say anything now and wait to get an offer and ask for an exemption; or (3) something else?

Any tips for moving up in a medium/large-sized legal department, aside from switching companies? I work in a collegial environment with plenty of opportunities to create more value, but the management level is fairly crowded and it seems the clearest path to get one of those roles is to be hired into it. What has been your experience? Thanks!

Considering taking a position with a small-cap in the US trying to build their legal department. The title is standard “counsel” although the work would be with the senior leadership team and reporting to the GC in Europe. How reasonable is it to ask for a bump in title - Senior counsel or Head of Legal, US? If it matters, I am a 6th year and have been told that I will be expected to hire a junior or paralegal as we build up.

I am considering taking a position with a current client (multi family and hospitality real estate developer and operator) that is experiencing rapid growth. If I accept the position, I will be the company’s first GC. Any advice or recommend resources would be welcomed!

Considering joining a small 50-person company as the only attorney (prior attorney is retiring). (I am currently in-house at a F50). For others who have done the same path, what surprises did you have when moving from a large company to a small one?

For example, it sounds like I should not expect a document management system, based on a prior post in this bowl. I’m guessing expenses like state bar fees and cell phone are not reimbursed.

Any advice on things to expect (or not expect)?
