Got a pe offer for the buy side and the comp was a lot lower than what i was expecting (to the point where i would be financially better off staying in consulting for the next couple of years). How should i think about this long term? The firm is an lmm - is this just how it is?

I work as in house counsel, and a lot of the employees are not qualified for their position and don’t understand legal/compliance even though they’ve been trained and should be competent enough to understand. I am an associate at a UMM and my employment contract has a 4 month non compete (yes, even for associates) but I am thinking of lateraling. What are the implications of breaking a non compete? I didn’t say anything when I signed because I was desperate for a PE offer but it seems so unfair as I am just a lowly associate. I am not so much worried about getting sued, but about my current employer tanking my reputation if I leave and break the non compete.
