Halloween in the office always cracks me up. Half the firm dresses like it’s a middle school spirit day, and the other half pretends it’s not happening while secretly judging the costumes. Last year someone came as Billable Frankenstein with time sheets pinned all over their jacket. I joined in this year, don't really care who gave me side eye. What do you think about dressing up at work?

It’s an important pressure release valve. Historically many societies had days where people dressed up or traded social positions for a day in jest, to serve that important social function. We’re no different.

This year I’m Snow White, but I also have to appear in court for routine motions, so I have a medium length yellow skirt, white button up, blue cardigan, red headband. (I’m in court every day, usually in all black, in front of the same judges all the time; they will be amused. Your mileage may vary.) I knew a judge who showed up to traffic court in one of those inflatable dinosaur costumes with a robe on top.

Lovin' that judge!

All about context and culture. If it’s a big chill event with lots of attorney participation by people at your level, go for it. But if it’s just staff, or partners, I wouldn’t want to be “that associate.”

like

What if it’s staff AND partners who dress up? (Yes, I’m being sassy).

I have themed sweaters for most holidays (including Halloween). feels festive without being over the top or pretending the holiday doesn’t exist lol

Many years ago, the attorneys in the San Diego office of the firm I was at dressed up for Halloween -- in suits. They claimed they had some 2Ls in for interviews and had to promise to bring them back to prove that wasn't normal attire.

like

I'm all for it! I love dressing up for Halloween, but I definitely go for a more understated look so I still look fairly professional. Today I'm RBG with a pearl collar for a jabot.

I love it, but it really depends on the firm culture. This was the first year where the staff asked if we could dress up, which was resoundingly approved by the partners, together with an in-office trick-or-treat for those who wanted to bring candy. At the last moment an in-office deposition was scheduled, and the staff very responsibly self-elected to ditch costumes so as to look professional for the deposition parties.

Other than photos taken and put on the internet (which are forever), this usually depends upon what the partners in your area approve of.

Question. I am a female POC. I’m curious what non-poc think about black women who wear hair colors other than natural black-brown in the workplace? I’m not talking about outlandish colors like pink, blue, green etc… The hair colors I’m referring to are like honey blonde ombré or balayage and the current trendy copper color. Thoughts?

I recently had a specialist partner send me a fairly nasty email after I (a transactional first year) was told to ask them to review something ASAP that had clearly been on my partner’s radar for over a week. Why am I taking the (honestly justified) blame for this? Surely it should be obvious that I’m just the messenger here.
