I had faced a similar situation, I have earlier asked for an increased salary with a counter offer with the company which I am going to join in 2 days. I have explained my concern on not joining due to salary expectations. They will not blacklist, In case if you feel any fear over blacklist change your gmail id while giving an interview for next time.
Get 2nd offer first
I'm in the exact same position now. I need to join on Monday for a new position who gave me the offer on Friday evening and asked me to accept the same day or I lose the offer since I already told them I'm open to working from Monday. I have an assurance from another company who will provide me an offer on Monday. I tried to push my doj with the first company which they said no to. I'm scared now, if I say no to the 1st and 2nd doesn't make me an offer I'll be left stranded.
P.S. second company is willing to offer more and is my preference.
Yes they matched the 2nd company but I still chose the 2nd company.
Don't worry. These companies do the same to candidates. There are a lot of companies out there. I have been trying so many interviews. After completing 3,4 and even 6 rounds, I get rejected. They are just wasting candidates time so that they can impress the stakeholders. These companies deserve this. Go ahead and decline
Rising Star
On a side note, how unethical/miserable it is to decline an offer just 2-3 days before joining? I committed to the HR of company A that I'd join for sure but things changed and this offer came just now? I feel so bad right now.
No, its not unethical. Stop taking things personally. If you have a better offer from company B, that company A is unable to match, then why should you hold back on your full potential? When you accepted the offer from company A, it was the best choice at the given moment. Now that you have a second offer, the situation has changed, so you need to make the best decision, considering all factors and keeping your career and financial goals in mind. Once you have decided, be professional and assertive - don't resort to absconding/ghosting. Speak to the HR plainly, and inform them of your decision. They may try to negotiate, don't get defensive. Listen to and understand what they have to say, take your time, decide, and revert professionally. If they resort to emotional blackmail or blacklisting threats, it's them being unprofessional, don't fall for it. Just stick to your decision and keep responding assertively.
If you feel that you are causing the company a loss - they waited 2-3 months for you to join and now you are declining the offer, etc., just remember that companies are running a business, and any business involves risk. Mitigating the impact of the risk is the business owner's job, not yours. Companies have safeguards in place, and if not, it means they running their business at a high risk, which ultimately means that they are hungry for profits.
It is not for you to think of all these factors. You job is just to make the best decision based on your career and financial goals. All the best!
